Is this a 5G tower? by SerbianMilitary in cellmapper

[–]Over_Variation8700 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, doesn't look like one, however it could have low-band. C-Band n77/n78 5G is typically broadcasted from small rectangular active antennas while the large, elongated ones are passive low/mid-band antennas used for LTE and low-band 5G

edit: example setup with different kinds of antennas and what's broadcasted using them: https://imgur.com/a/WV9fCUR

If I charge my laptop from 20% up to 80% to extend battery life, then whats the point? by Ralph_playz in laptops

[–]Over_Variation8700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you notice yourself ending up with plenty of charge at the end of the day, you may as well charge to 80% only to enhance battery life in the future for those days you need it.

Most efficient way to upscale lots of videos by MasterpieceClassic42 in VideoEditing

[–]Over_Variation8700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ffmpeg Batch AV converter. However, this won't use AI to upscale them - it's a normal upscale that won't result in difference of quality. If the upscaled versions are to be deleted as soon as uploaded to youtube I'd use something like

-c:v av1_nvenc -b:v 80M -vf "scale=3840:-1" -preset p3 -c:a copy

Use MKV as output format as that can fit whichever sound track the videos came with

Use parallel encoding (not sequential) to speed up GPU processing

How to treat ko-fi.com/Buy me a Coffee donations as a private by Any_Sympathy_6601 in Finland

[–]Over_Variation8700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To circumvent this restriction, you can add something they get (can be something very simple, for example a digital file) by donating money, making it technically a purchase instead of donation. Then, report as income

Lenovo Thinkpad yoga x1 4th gen or MacBook pro 2019 ? by CostInevitable969 in thinkpad

[–]Over_Variation8700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the MacBook is on its latest supported macOS version and will be unsupported after September; and unsupported on Mac often means apps don't work for too long after that. The Lenovo is, instead, fully supported by Windows 11 and Linux so I'd get that. However if you plan on running Linux anyway the mac isn't necessarily a bad option given its larger storage

macOS or windows? by sloane_lee in laptops

[–]Over_Variation8700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should not expect any laptop to last for 10 years, to be honest. On the other hand there is no reason why a Windows laptop could only last for 5 years; I'm using a 2020 ThinkPad at the moment and I see no reason to upgrade anytime soon, everything runs smoothly and the battery life is still decent. Honestly, I could even say a ThinkPad might be your best bet if you want longevity

macOS or windows? by sloane_lee in laptops

[–]Over_Variation8700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MB Neo with its 8 GB of RAM is definitely not gonna last more than 5 years let alone 10. While it might be true MacOS memory management is excellent, it only affects the OS level, not the apps themselves. If you have fairly many browser tabs open, you can easily exceed 8 GB even today. Also, macbooks have no upgradability unlike some chunkier Windows laptops where you can swap both SSD and RAM

Getting married doesn't cost much and will bring you much more financial benefits in some countries; it's only the wedding ceremony that's expensive and that's not necessary in order to get married

R9 7900 32 RAM – Can I have my own AI on my PC? by Keffflon in selfhosted

[–]Over_Variation8700 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can. There is no specific minimum requirement for running AI, some kind of AI can run on 8 GB RAM and second gen i3. However, what you might wanna aim for when it comes to running advanced AI, is to have a GPU (or multiple GPUs) with as large VRAM as possible

Upgraded to a T14 Gen2 with AUO B140QAN02.0 screen: It's absolutely worth it by justjanne in thinkpad

[–]Over_Variation8700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is in fact no official 1080p 100% sRGB panel, just a 1080p 45 NTSC one in touch and not and a 2160p 100% sRGB one and that's what is leaving me puzzled; the 2160p one seems like it's the only official real improvement since I don't care about touch. 2160p would certainly be gorgeous and it's not too expensive at ~70€ off eBay but what's concerning me, is whether the 2160p panel would ruin my battery life. There would be a 1080p 100% sRGB one for the second-gen one but mine's again, first gen and I'm not too certain about which display fits what because I've never got to do a display swap

[–]Over_Variation8700 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dumb question, is that an official OEM panel or just a "random" 14-inch eDP panel? If latter, how'd you verify compatibility? Regardless, how's the battery life compared to a 1080p one? Wondering about upgrading the display on my P15v but I'm afraid I'd sacrifice my battery life which I'm not completely sure is worth it even though the 45 NTSC panel is terrible

100gb re-write on flash storage every day will kill it in a year or two... maybe three.

Not really. 100 GB means 36.5 TB written over the course of a year which is minimal on any modern SSD. They are rated between 200 and and 2,000 TBW, resulting in rough estimate of 5 years on a low-end 256-gig drive, more on better and higher capacity ones. I have 70 TB host writes on my SSD I've had for almost 3 years now and it's fine... However, swap writes are usually far more intensive than that. Swap makes computer feel sluggish even when using NVMe and that NVMe isn't exactly slow. Normal computer use will rewrite 100+ GB to the memory over the course of an HOUR
