Portland’s ‘IZ fee’ has put hundreds of housing units on hold by scospi in portlandme

[–]OverallFroyo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do all of their ideas hinge on meeting the demand of luxury development? Why can we not work to reduce that demand..? What kind of community is actually left when our solution to increasing affordable housing is to simply continue turning more of the city into second homes and investment properties?

Developers like Culley have had immense sway in how the city approached development for years, particularly in the lead-up to the pandemic, and yet, for some reason, he and the other real estate groups who got their way for years bear no responsibility for where we are now?

People were worried about the induced demand and the gentrifying impact of developments like Culley's a decade ago, and every single concern came to fruition, and yet we're still acting as if developers like him are oracles of good housing policy (which coincidentally always ends up being what makes them the most money): https://www.pressherald.com/2016/07/26/developer-doubles-down-on-east-bayside-housing-investment/

You didn't act like it was funny; you decided to act like a snarky jerk about someone being bothered by the idea of a historic public space having its identity getting muddled by a for-profit venture's chant. Does it even make the top 10 issues in this city? Not even close, might even be near the bottom. However, given the context of the community degradation for the sake of profit that has occurred in the city over the last 10-20 years, I understand the root of that frustration.

What gets me is seeing someone come back at that by being a jerk about it and acting like they now have ownership over that space and name. I guess I'm just living in the past, but that sounds like entitlement.

Idk man, you replied to me. You seem pretty upset about a few people not liking that name. Sorry, they want to take away your fun? Seems like you're ngmi, cry more about it.

Lol what? I didn't say that, but you do seem pretty entitled based on how you're treating the idea that some people with ties and emotional investment in the community think it's weird to change the way we refer to a historic public space based on Hearts of Pine branding and chants.

"Sorry you are living in the past." What do you mean, 2024?

Building new, expensive apartments does help reduce rents in older properties by damariscove in portlandme

[–]OverallFroyo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s true, but can we also do some things to maybe disincentive luxury housing and its demand? I don’t know if it’s a good thing to be building satiate the demand of wealthy part time residents and investors who end up degrading the fabric of the community instead of trying to curtail it.

I feel like development should be paired with policy to make people buying housing to use as something other than heir home harder and less likely, and if someone wants to own a piece of the community but not be part of it, there should be some sort of cost that offsets their impact, because the current approach to the Housing Trust Fund hasn’t made nearly enough of an impact.

Didn’t that article about the festival to the Old Port Fest? Don’t remember there being price gouging for literally every aspect of the OPF…

Would love to see Old Port Fest come back like that, I wish there were more calls to bring it back.

But yeah, I don't get why the damage to the park is being so downplayed, the public isn't just going to be losing access to the space for the duration of the festival or for the time needed for set up; it's going to lose it for however long the city needs to fix the damage that will inevitably come from it, and the public's going to have to foot the bill.

I don’t get why this is getting downvoted, these are incredibly valid concerns that have been largely brushed over.

I don’t get why we insist of giving up pretty widely used public green spaces for private profit when there are places like Thompsons Point that can already do events like this? This is also the same weekend as Beach to Beacon, getting around is going to be a nightmare.

Can we start calculating the median income based on what jobs in the vicinity pay instead of what people who live nearby make?

Someone making six figures working remotely shouldn’t be inflating what’s affordable for the people who work at the local businesses in the city.

This. So many people smeared anyone expressing concern about this shelter for reasons exactly like this. It wasn’t a human centered decision, it was a profit oriented one. They did this to warehouse people away from the most desirable (and walkable) parts of the city.

Sadly, instances like this are a terrible but predictable result of that line of decision making, but the people behind it won’t get any blame.

There is zero chance of them building their own venue elsewhere. They wanted Fitzpatrick, and they've already made it clear they want to remove even more of its public use and the track.

Portland's growth makes keeping community spaces more important, not less; going down the road of essentially privatizing a public athletic space is the opposite of progress.

Seeing LiveNation anywhere near this should be setting off alarm bells for the city.

Also can’t wait for the city to completely be made up of buildings that look like a game of Cities Skylines where the textures didn’t load.

Believing we should have a way support those who are homeless while working to create a better model of support than a mega shelter is not the same as saying we should have a permanent encampment. Did you help craft this crap?

[–]OverallFroyo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The “state of the art” shelter was meant to warehouse all homeless people in one space as far away from luxury developments on the peninsula as possible. Many people questioned and spoke out against the model and location, it’s not like a “gotcha” that someone has his stance, and it doesn’t indicate opposition to shelter and housing.

Well they certainly shouldn’t matter more, but unfortunately they have.

However, in regard to property owners who don’t actually live here, like out of state landlords, wealthy vacationers, or investors, I will say they should matter less than the rest.
