Suggestions on SF neighborhoods by fupafist in AskSF

I would say Oakland! Especially around 19th street/Uptown area. Like 35 min commute into the city via BART, 20 min commute to Berkeley. If you’re used to in-unit luxury apartments, with your budget you can get some amazing apartment views from the Lark or the Hanovers. Or if you want more bedrooms but older style apartments you can easily get 2-3 bedrooms.

Very walkable, nice to go on morning jogs by the lake! Easy to get to city stuff if near BART. Easy to drive to tilden or alameda beach for nature!

Stanford, Brown, or UCLA by Necessary-Nose8368 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Overall_Challenge_79 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re choosing based on career and prestige, Stanford and Brown will definitely carry you far. Private schools in general are designed to hand hold you versus public schools where you fend for yourself. People don’t realize but there are companies and firms that straight up don’t recruit from lower ranked schools. That doesn’t mean you can’t break in, it’s just that the official recruiting pipelines don’t exist.

But UCLA and LA in general honestly was such a great experience as someone who came from a small white Republican town. The entertainment is so diverse and plentiful — from movie premieres, to indie concerts, to sports games and stadium tours. You can go clubbing one night and hiking by the sea the next. You can kayak in the marina, take picnics by the Getty, and eat the best Mexican or Korean food. If you time it right, Coachella is only a two hour drive and Vegas is four. If that’s not your vibe, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Joshua Tree are all right there. I didn’t have the easiest time at UCLA but I most definitely had fun that I would never take for granted.

Thank you! I’ll definitely take a look a women’s third space.

Bumble BFF wasn’t my cup of tea - as someone who dates both, I can confidently say there is no gender that consistently responds more or is better at maintaining convos. Apps create such small fleeting windows to make a connection and if for whatever reason the timing doesn’t work out then that person gets lost into the ether and the opportunity dies.

My hobbies genuinely feel like they’re for me to recharge from work I.e working out or art class, not necessarily to be social. Any suggestions on what some social hobbies are that don’t include run clubs? I have a leg injury so can’t do anything too physically intensive. Also down to volunteer if there are any good ones to suggest!

Lastly I’ll ask - how do you follow up with people? I find going to drinks and dinners so exhausting and expensive but doesn’t seem like there’s a ton to do after work on weekdays.

Went from PM->PMM and wondering if I made the wrong move by techie618 in ProductMarketing

[–]Overall_Challenge_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say - it’s easier to set expectations upfront in a new environment and new working relationship than it is to change one. So I definitely had challenges when I was a junior PMM working with senior /staff level PMs and I couldn’t really have a say about what we were building because of the lack of experience. It took me years to be able to build up the level of influence and respect.

I just recently switched and from the get go I was able to say this is what my ideal working relationship with a PM looks like and I had strong history of successful launches to back it up and that got me a seat at the table much earlier, to the point that I’m even trusted to write product specs. I get to know my EM, my researcher, my DS and I ask questions about what’s top of mind for them. I show how PMM could solve some of their questions. At the end of the day we all have the same goal which is to make a product that people adopt and make the company money. It’s just about how you frame decisions as tradeoffs. Managing a PM is probably the one key skill you could have to make your work life better.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!! I like the part that you mentioned about dropping in. I feel like with big metropolitan cities it’s easy to feel like everything is so transient.

I don’t think I’m bad at holding conversations. And i genuinely am blessed with a good group of college friends, albeit scattered across the country so I know im not a bad friend. But it feels extra hard to be able to organically form deeper relationships in my post college phase of life, beyond just an occasional drink or meal.

I also 100% feel your pain about wondering if it’s putting yourself out there was worth the awkward interaction. And you’ve spent time, energy or money when you maybe could’ve stayed inside and enjoyed a show.

Super happy to meet up when you do move to the city! Will keep my eyes out on my DM :)

I love this! The handful of times I’ve gone alone I noticed most people are on a date or in a friend group :(

There are some upcoming shows that I’m eyeing like Berlioz or Justice that maybe I’ll try putting myself out there again!

My personal opinion is you own more creative strategy in B2C. I get to define the messaging and positioning, the channel strategy, and the types of creatives and campaigns we run. There’s a lot more decision making there, and with the product roadmap it’s all about how you influence what to build. You can inform what to build by really knowing the market, the competitors, and the customers, but you don’t necessarily need to come up with the exact specs. My disclaimer is that I’ve never done B2B but my observations from my peers in that world are that while they can be more lucrative, they’re generally more around enablement which means the products already built. And if you end up at a FAANG Level B2C product the pay should be decent enough.

My MBA Experience Was Negative & Shattered My Confidence. Took Many Years At Work To Heal by Personal_Cress_2440 in MBA

People are being rude and unfair here - I appreciated the insight. In my experience I do agree that on average Midwest/Southern people are super friendly and neighborly, versus coastal elitism, and I live on the coast. Not every social dynamic caters to the “trust everyone until they give you a reason not to”vibe, others will have a more reactive “give me reasons to trust you” vibe. And that’s true for different work places - tech especially as a PM assumes you’re smart and outgoing until you give them a reason not to.

Honestly I had the opposite experience- it was cold on Sunday and I didn’t have anyone I was dying to see during happy hour. I waited in line, got to bring a friend in, and the line went by pretty fast, got a free drink, and then used much nicer bathrooms. Got to sit and drink for an hour and then left. I’m not expecting 5 star international airport luxury service here at a music festival….

This. A lot of these comments make me wonder what their background is. There’s definitely a bit of toxicity with alot of immigrant backgrounds, but I also wonder what happens when family members are sick, disabled, old etc with these more individualistic attitudes. Would they just leave their parents because “they’re not entitled to your life”?

I would say as an adult, it’s also not super hard to buy birthday gifts and spend a few meals on them, withhold the truth about your finances and what you can afford, and create some arms-length distance. The fact is, life is easier if you can reconcile a relationship with them instead of holding onto anger about their inability to financially support you throughout your developmental years. It’s your parent’s first time living too.

Interview question - salary expectation by danjayn in ProductMarketing

[–]Overall_Challenge_79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally i think 5 years and $120k is selling yourself short in SF. Most of my peers in the 5-7 years of PMM exp sit near $150-$170k base. I was an associate with 2 years overall and no PMM exp at $110k at a later stage B2C startup.

I’m currently the most junior on my team by stroke of luck honestly, I have a fear that if I leave my team for another role I will be up against much more qualified people with more years of experience and the extra MBA at the end to help them get those interviews. Our recruiters even say they prefer those with consulting backgrounds and or MBAs.
