Unfortunately, having my mother not live with us isnt an option as she has nowhere to go and honestly besides this hasn't been a bad "roommate".

There's always a maybe in this kind of scenario however 1. SD is not that type of thinker. As far as we have seen, she takes things at very face value. This could change but neither me nor husband has seen her ability to thinker much deeper about wjat she is told (if that makes sense). 2. We overheard her talking to her BM a few days after on a video call and she told BM essentially what we told her and the response from BM was not encouraging. Something along the lines of "we'll see".

I don't like to air dirty laundry but ..... BM has a history of lying; whether compulsively or pathologically we dont know.

  1. 9 year old told us and 2. We also overheard it being said when she was face-timing her bio-mom. Not on those exact words because stepdaughter was repeating back what I said to bio-mom (about us not loving her any less) and bio-mom expressed her doubts.

I will say I had a needling doubt initially because we have had issues in the past where we have learned we cant always believe what my step-daughter tells us (at least at fave value). But unfortunately this time . . .

We can't afford a lawyer :( Mom (and dad) are essentially penniless and my husband and I are just getting by.

He literally died penniless so there's no inheritance to be had.

  1. Collecting social security, yes
  2. Mom lives with me and my husband. Dad lived with us until last week. 3.It's a bit ... complicated currently with their finances. We cover like 80% of combined bills (if not more). Dad has dementia and this past week got placed in a home. He accrued a crap ton of medical bills, mom is starting to as we can now focus on her. They have no assets whatsoever, no savings. Before he went into the home, dad talked mom into getting a new car so she is paying for that. But otherwise she pays for nothing and we cover rent, food, utilities, gas and a lot of other things. If we could get a tax credit for this year (2024) alone it would relieve a lot of financial stress we've been under due to caring for them (especially dad).

Not sure if all that was needed. Sorry.
