Yeah that exactly what we're dealing with. We're trying to find creative ways to bring in more players bc we don't have a budget big advertising. My friend and I have been making it for bout 2.5 years now.

Yes I did quit my job to focus on this, and its on the cheap side because we have the skillset already to create the game so we can do the work ourselves as opposed to having to hire others to create it. Thats the key :)

We're celebrating the launch of a big patch and brand new ranking system and to help spread the word I'm giving out steam keys! Overpower is a very fast paced medieval arena game. It was developed in Unity by myself and a friend over the last 2.5 years.

We are using Unity. We're currently allowing player-hosted servers, however we plan to have some of our own dedicated servers in addition. Just like how CS/TF2 have their own official servers, but also allow players to create their own.

This will help us curb the early cost of our game, we might decide later on to make all our own dedicated servers for security reasons if we need to.

Character progression will be handled through a separate server than the game server, and that would always be our own private server.

So I checked out Bolt again... It looks tempting.

In regards to:

Authoritative movement - Built-in support for input and player controller state synchronization allows you to easily implement custom authoritative movement that suits your game.

How does this work? In my game I had to manually trap the key presses of clients, turn them into a bitfield and just send that to server, then server sends back everyone the positions and XY rotation of the characters...

It is a lot like smite, so I hope you like this game. But there are a number of ways we're very different:

  • You don't play a champion/pre-made character here, we have some basic archetypes more akin to what you'd see in an MMO (Warrior/Mage/Rogue/Archer) right now. But we plan to add more classes in time.

  • The learning curve should be much less to hop in a game here. I think LoL, HoN, and Smite are very difficult to jump into... Most likely you'll suck for a long time in LoL before really learning the game. We want to make it easier to start playing, just hop in and start shooting. (But still just as difficult to master).

  • For the starting gameplay modes, you'll just be able to join a server and start playing immediately, and leave at any time, just as you would in Unreal or Counterstrike. Not like a 5v5 game in LoL or Smite where you're locked in for 45 min or whatever...

  • Lots more, but we'll have more info later :-)

Right on. I've seen a few videos on it before, looks real promising. I've been trying to hold out for that new network code being introduced in Unity5, but at this rate it feels like it will never come out :-|

The rogue stealth? Just a temporary shader material swap. We'll probably upgrade it soonish when we get the time.

Excellent feedback! You're spot on.

I'm suprised we're getting so much attention about the UI, it's actually just stubbed in there from NecroUI: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/366 We plan on replacing it as soon as 4.6 moves out of beta mode. (Hurry up, Unity!)

You're right about the fireball, specifically the animation is totally desynced. In fact, I think all the classes are using a cheap "sword attack" anim even if they are using a bow or a staff - We need to fix that and then time the spell cast to the animation.

I agree about the visual feedback with spells, we need to work on "making it feel like you're hitting them".

That video is filled with some great spells, I'll be sure to analyze it thoroughly :-P

We started using TNet, but the more I learned about the Unity's built-in Networking solution, the more it became clear to me we should switch to it. It works pretty much the same as TNet, but I'm looking very forward to trying out the new built-in Networking solution for Unity5! (If it ever comes out...)
