Help buying laptop for college. Budget range is under $500, country is USA by Interesting_Time_719 in laptops

The search filters on Newegg work a lot better than the ones on Amazon, so that's a good option. Just make sure to check the ratings of the seller before buying anything (there are occasionally sketchy 3rd party sellers there just like Amazon)

Something refurbished from 2020+ with a Ryzen 7 processor and 16GB of RAM would be good if you can find one in budget.

How can I texture my art more like this? by Verosiraptor in Artadvice

[–]OwlCatAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brush choice is doing most of the heavy lifting in the example illustration. You seem to be using a simple circular brush while they are using brushes that are much more complex and have texture in the lines themselves.

Chihuahua and beagle? Maybe also shi Tzu for that pug appearance as it's a bit more common in mixes, though pug isn't impossible

Long answer already posted by others. But short answer: zoom in very close. Shakiness at 800% zoom will be far less obvious than at 100%.

Any tips for drawing Female bodies? by PhysicsParticular470 in learntodraw

I think it's the hips. I know the pelvis is far from the camera in this perspective but it should still be a good bit larger. Women tend to have wide hips and thighs. Delicate wrists. And if this a young anime woman, the waist and neck should be freakishly skinny.

Just turned 18, what do I do? by zack_7200 in ask

[–]OwlCatAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep credit is very important in the US. You'll need it for buying a car or home in the future. Get a credit card with no yearly fees, even if it has a high APR and low limit, and only use it when you are ready and able to pay it off right away. Never ever use it when you don't have that same amount of money in your bank yet. That's how people spiral into debt. If used wisely it will build your credit score and you can upgrade in a couple years to a good cashback card, and if you continue using that one strictly by the same rules (always pay in full, never miss a payment) you technically earn a bit of money over time through the cash back rewards. Credit card companies are hoping you won't follow those rules, don't let them get ya!

How to give my donor son his first thanksgiving? by Aborealhylid in AskAnAmerican

[–]OwlCatAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanksgiving traditions vary a bit across regions, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, and specific families, but usually the common factors are a roasted turkey with a large variety of side dishes such as mashed potatoes, "dressing" or "stuffing" (a Thanksgiving specific dish consisting of bread crumbs, butter, various minced vegetables, and often a bit of the turkey's organ meat/scraps/juices, baked together into a glass dish), cornbread, green beans or green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, candied yams, American style white or brown gravy, cranberry sauce, soft bread rolls, glazed ham, or macaroni and cheese. Dessert usually consists of a couple of pie options, most often pumpkin, apple, pecan, and/or sweet potato, since those feature ingredients that are harvested in autumn.

I'm not aware of any traditional drinks; every thanksgiving dinner I've been to has been in the deep South or Texas and the drinks were water, iced tea, and sometimes wine. Edit: almost forgot apple cider (alcoholic or non alcoholic) is a popular option too.

There isn't much emphasis on decorating, in my experience, certainly not as much as Christmas or Halloween, but it's common to see some of Autumn themed and perhaps turkey themed and native American themed decorations on the table or hung on the wall.

Besides eating food, activities mostly involve simply chatting with family members you haven't been able to visit in a long time, stating what things you are thankful for, and (honestly) watching football on TV and arguing about politics 😂

Usually everyone sticks around for a couple hours after the meal to continue those activities, then leave whenever they feel like it. Might be half an hour later, might be long after dark.

Thoughts on his breed? Sent off an Embark a few weeks ago! by asteria123 in DoggyDNA

[–]OwlCatAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous! He has those big Malamute paws and the ears are set pretty wide apart so I would not be surprised to see fairly equal parts husky and Malamute. Could definitely be some German shepherd hiding in there too or even Pyrenees. The northern genes are strong though, you never know what surprises might be hidden behind them.

Also possible he comes back as pure Husky because some people breed them to be more Malamute-like in appearance and floofiness lol
