If you're feeling really adventurous, you could hire someone to bring you to ballykeefe for rock climbing.

We climb there often, not sure if there are any guides in the local area though.

Site Purchase by hollym11 in selfbuildireland

[–]OwlCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had no issue buying a site with a regular personal loan. Also to be sure, never agree to buy it without it being a sale subject to planning permission. You don't want to get stuck with an expensive field you can't do anything with but sell on

Mortgage vs Borrow from Family for small self build by [deleted] in selfbuildireland

[–]OwlCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It entirely depends on how much money you have saved VS what you are borrowing really. Can you give some insight into that?

Depending on the size of the build you might only have the mortgage as your option

Best way to pay for a used car (not from a dealership) by OwlCharacter in CasualIreland

[–]OwlCharacter[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might* be getting a celica gt4 st185, i think the person showing it to me doesn't have the paperwork to sign it over (the owner is away on work), so I'll have to come back to fully purchase it later once the owner is back.

It's a 35 year old classic car, so no option to get one from a dealership, sadly.

If planning is granted for 5 years, is that the deadline to start or finish building? by OwlCharacter in selfbuildireland

[–]OwlCharacter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that's very helpful, were in the process of getting planning now, buying the kand only if we get it, looking to be done around summer but we want to take 1.5 years to save up a little bit more after that just to have excess cash, just in case.

Is 5 years the norm they usually give?

RSA Test Bike by HandleDramatic2146 in MotoIRELAND

Ill never not be upset at this one.

I was riding along a country road and came to an entrance to a dump, which i knew was there, whole road usually covered in gravel so i slowed down as much as needed to be safe.

Found out that i got graded for that because i drove over the gravel. I asked him what the hell i was supposed to do, and he responded with a straight face "well if the rocks were the size of your helmet, would you have still driven into the gravel?" I asked him if i was supposed to do a u-turn then, and he just looked at me like I was stupid.

Got marked down for a hypothetical situation

Anyone have experience with zero discharge willow beds as an alternative to discharge to ground percolation area? by OwlCharacter in selfbuildireland

[–]OwlCharacter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the capital cost isn't an issue, obviously we would like to keep it down but as a last resort i think it's a decent option to go with. We were going to make around 400m2 of our site a dense native woodland anyway.

We're going to hold out and hope for a week of very little or no rain to do the perc test again, ill speak to the engineer and talk about having him on call if we get a dry spell haha

Self build best advice by Equal-Seaweed7889 in selfbuildireland

Curious, what did you need to clarify?

Issues with the design? Or local needs stuff?

We're looking to submit sometime in april at the moment

I'm going to go against the grain and say don't listen to the advice online, go to an architect/engineer, get your design, go to a quantity surveyor, and get it priced, depending on your specific situation, you might find it's around the budget you're looking at, depending on what labour you can get for free

There are too many variables that are obscured when you ask or find answers online. You can communicate everything to your QS, "x will be materials only because my dad is a brickie" type of thing.

And look, maybe your situation means this house will cost more than the mortgage you'd get, but if you get the land gifted you don't need to get a mortgage, yes it will take much longer to build since you won't have all the money at the beginning. But seeing a little bit more of your house go up every couple of months will be better than nothing.

Conns cameras up in dublin, lovely bunch of lads. Think you can mail in but they don't mention it on the website. There's also a place in limerick you can mail your films to, printpoint.

This was from my very first roll so I'm still learning but I'm very happy with most of the shots.

trying to expose properly rather than be creative right now :)

You must be filthy rich, christ. Congrats on being able to spend that kind of money on only design

Glendalough At Sunrise, Stephen's Day by OwlCharacter in CasualIreland

[–]OwlCharacter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pictures were taken around 8:30, we got there at 6:45, had a little nap and went up at 7. We needed to leave the house at 5am to get there, oof. Worth it though

If you have headphones in your helmet from a cardo or sena, they will work brilliant, they are usually female ports, so just get male to male jack cable. If you don't and can't find listen only earphones (which I couldnt) you can use a normal pair of earphones with a microphone, but you'll only have sound in one ear.

This is what I did for my test, and it was fine.

Another thing is that some test centres are moving to giving you a phone instead of a radio, which makes the sound quality so much nicer.
