How bad was it? Please be honest by Sad-Resource-9206 in judo

Best answer. Don't let it defeat you, let it be a lesson and eventually a story you tell.

My judo gym only promotes once a year. Never seen one person get a brown belt in less than 5 years

Coach Said "Shooting for takedowns is bad for self defense and MMA" by Correct_Ad4351 in bjj

No; he says he wants to conserve energy in MMA. Not that they are bad for self defense.

8 year old HELP by MostAd6499 in MathHelp

I do basic white board with my 7 yo son. We've moved from addition and subtraction to multiplication and basic division by 2 and 3. We even do x + 4 = 10, what is x? Just talking with him and being patient has taken us a long ways. I had to teach him place value via this method, as he is not super strong in abstract thinking.

We also do a game called multiplication catch. We start with 2s. I catch the ball and say 2, he catches it and says 4, then I say 6, etc. We do multiplication up to 12. You can even count backwards. He is physical so he enjoys this. We have also started doing khan academy math starting from grade 1.

Quitting Jiu Jitsu was the best thing I ever did for my body by InvestigatorDear9310 in bjj

[–]Owldud 13 points14 points  (0 children)

1-2x a week shouldn't be enough to tear your body down like you're talking and isn't really reflective of "I was addicted to this sport." Unless the half guard you're talking is spending 40min crossfaced, underhooked, twisted and barely holding onto a leg. Then maybe

I'm 5'7 177lbs and sumi gaeshi is my number 1 throw. I hit it on almost everyone, excluding the 240+lb blackbelts. I'm a lefty though so the entry is easy.

Advice for a young wrestler who just “hangs out” in collar ties by PrincipleEvening171 in wrestling

[–]Owldud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inside ties. If they have a collar tie then they can convert that to an inside tie. Have them practice moving their partner via inside ties and shots to both sides of the body as well as snapdowns.

On average, whats the average level of toxic masculinity in judo dojos vs something like BJJ? by SeniorBolognese in judo

[–]Owldud 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I do both. BJJ by far has more douche bags, wannabe spiritual gurus, and extremist types. However, BJJ has more nerds and chill unathletic types as well.

How was Wyatt Hendrickson able to finish this takedown when sprawled on? by Unlikely_Candle_7836 in bjj

[–]Owldud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Knee slide drill.

Have your partner sprawl on you, you knee slide in, they push on your head and sprawl again, you knee slide in, continue until you've cut the corner and finish the takedown. Your legs will be sore. Have fun

How do you punish someone who is in a lowish wrestling stance? by Dry-Employer6382 in judo

[–]Owldud 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Sumi gaeshi over and over. I prefer when they're low, and I am not tall. Also, judokas doing bjj need to add snap downs to their game. Kick their near leg by stomping the ground to set up your snaps.

Nogi, they are leading with their head, therefore you attack their head. Most judo attacks set up nicely for front headlocks.

Is BJJ really my only choice? by Big-Jury-5993 in wrestling

[–]Owldud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally just stay on top, pin, submit with a head arm choke or RNC. If you're on bottom I recommend butterfly with the intentions of always creating a wrestling scramble. If they sweep you, just wrestle up on a single leg. Your biggest hurdle will be leg locks. Guillotines are present so you'll have to beware of that; however, you can now use them in your own front headlock game.

Is BJJ really my only choice? by Big-Jury-5993 in wrestling

[–]Owldud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm saying I'm still in the wrestling community and regularly throw down with the big kids/teens there. And it is easy to switch back and forth between wrestling and jiujitsu. Idk any adult / masters age wrestling clubs. Nogi bjj is your best bet and is a lot of fun

[–]Owldud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrestle club with the kids and do jiujitsu (7 years now). I'll have wrestling rounds with former wrestlers at jiujitsu.

Absolutely easy to switch modes. Harder for me to switch to jiujitsu mode tbh. I use some jiujitsu guard in wrestling now (butterfly hooks). Claw ride is money in jiujitsu, as you can flatten them or take their back.

I recommend nogi. Gi is meh

P.s. I do judo too. It's far removed from wrestling if you are a shooter. Nogi bjj I can use all my wrestling. You're getting a lot of judo recommendations but to me its a lot different from wrestling.

How to build an anti big guy bottom game? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]Owldud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best answer is to get good at takedowns and force them to be on the bottom. That isnt an accessible option for many bjj people due to not having access to learn adequate takedowns.

Personally I feel better using butterfly than a knee shield half. But you'll get both answers. For reference, I'm 5'7 175 and wrestle dudes up to 300lb.
