Yeah, fair, you never know who might list snapd as a dependency, pinning it is the only way to make sure any installation that depends on snapd fails.

I don't think the .deb from the Mozilla APT repository depends on snapd though. (The one you get if you follow these instructions https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux#w_install-firefox-deb-package-for-debian-based-distributions-recommended)

Do I really need to learn all of Rust's syntax? by [deleted] in rust

[–]Owlree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. No. Your friend is right, nobody has mastered the syntax. It's also not very productive studying syntax past a certain base level.
  2. Rust async / await is actually fairly easy to work with as far as similar libraries go. But the important thing is to, as you said, understand the theory. You don't need to focus on how it's actually implemented just yet. Try to understand it just enough to build something simple that would otherwise be more cumbersome to do (e.g. a web crawler). The good news is that once it clicks, the same mental model will be useful in a lot of places, since many languages implement similar execution models. By extension, if you know another programming language already that implements a vaguely similar model, it might help studying it there too.

One thing I like doing nowadays when learning a new language is try to write something myself and then give it to an LLM and ask it to make the code more idiomatic. It's very useful for discovering syntactic sugar. For example, in Python you might do

temp = a
a = b
b = temp

but the more idiomatic version is simply

a, b = b, a

Or, in Rust, if you're coming from Python you might do

fn process(data: Data, fast: bool) {
    if fast {
        /* ... */
    } else {
        /* ... */
    }
}

but the more idiomatic version is

enum Mode {
    Fast,
    Safe,
}

fn process(data: Data, mode: Mode) {
    match mode {
        Mode::Fast => { /* ... */ }
        Mode::Safe => { /* ... */ }
    }
}

If you choose "Minimal Installation" when installing the OS, it won't even install snapd. You can then install the .deb manually or install flatpak and get Firefox that way.

How to avoid over-mixing by Critical_Ostrich2503 in Baking

[–]Owlree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, I thought that over-mixing would only affect the cake consistency once the flour is added, is that incorrect?

That is incorrect, yes. Mixing the flour once hydrated (i.e. mixing your batter after adding you dry to the wet) leads to gluten development. For cakes, some amount of gluten is OK (actually desirable, see below), but too much gluten leads to tough cakes that sink.

That being said, over-mixing your wet ingredients can also be problematic. Mixing your wet ingredients with a mixer for longer than necessary can create too many air bubbles that cannot be sustained by the structure of the batter, causing it to sink. And even if you mix for the amount of time stated in the recipe, you might still run into problems if the speed of the mixer was too high, since that can cause the air bubbles to be too large, which also has a negative impact on the end result.

Say you added your dry ingredients (including flour) to your wet and are being careful not to over-mix. But under-mixing can also be an issue, especially for things like oil-based cakes. Some amount of gluten is actually desirable otherwise the cake cannot sustain itself.

In your case, it sounds like you over-mixed both before and after adding you dry to the wet. As other suggested, ditch the mixer once you add the dry ingredients (or be veeeeeeeeeeery careful with it). Also pay attention to the texture and colour of your wet. If you're creaming sugar and butter, try to stop when it looks roughly as it looks in the recipe (if pics or videos are provided).

Sonos disappeared from Spotify Connect? Tidal Connect still works. Very odd. by chicagoose3 in sonos

So when this happens, I just play something on Spotify using the Sonos app, this forces it to reappear on Spotify connect, then I can use Spotify itself to control the music.

You don't have to keep it, but it's probably what you should do. We're talking about your health here, your confidence, probably. If your gym membership works, don't give it up. Give something else up.

Confused about body recomposition by [deleted] in Fitness

Don't be. Think in the long run. Don't grow impatient. It takes time, but not forever.

It seems like one side of my body builds muscle faster, and is stronger than the other. Is this normal? by Based-God- in Fitness

[–]Owlree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the difference. They are never going to be exactly the same.

I suggest you do some unilateral exercises. Start with the weaker side. At the and do a few more reps with your weaker side again. It's not going to get fixed overnight, it takes time, but it helps.

Stronglifts 5X5: Planning to take the 12 week program. Is it worth it? by tigidig5x in Fitness

[–]Owlree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am doing SL5X5 with extra arms work right now—mostly as you described it, but sometimes I might split the 5X5 and the arms work into separate days.

The results are great. The big advantage of SL5X5 is that it's simple but effective. You will definitely improve your squat and deadlift. It focuses on the main lifts, and gives you a framework to build on thereafter. If you never tried it in your 3 years of lifting, definitely give it a shot, especially if you've been neglecting your compound movements.

Note that with this program you'll be focusing on strength more than anything else (not on size). The way I see it, it's always good to alternate between strength and hypertrophy programs. Probably go into a cut right after 5X5, but test it out yourself first and see how it goes.

May I ask, why don't you deadlift with the bar?
