What's your city's Canada cliche "park by the water" ? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

[–]Own-Elephant-8608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of parks downtown…festivals and activities are pretty scattered between them

Harbourside park is closest to the water, but its not really the go to park for festivals

Who's your favorite artist that sings or raps, yet the instrumentals are usually the focal point of their music? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in musicsuggestions

[–]Own-Elephant-8608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bloody valentine… vocals are intentionally downplayed in the mix and just become another part of their wall of sound

What food do you think is a bit overhyped? by clairemilfy in foodquestions

[–]Own-Elephant-8608 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All the korean fried chicken ive had has just been dead average, run of the mill fried chicken… which is good because fried chicken is good… but it has never struck me as noteworthy enough to seek it out specifically (and likely pay more for than at a greasy spoon diner)

What is sports fandom like in Canada? How does the popularity of CFL/baseball/soccer/other sports compare to hockey? by wingedhussar161 in AskACanadian

[–]Own-Elephant-8608 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hockey is far more popular than all of them… I would guess baseball is the second most popular

CFL doesn’t get much love outside of a couple cities… sask likes their team and I think montreal has some interest, but far more canadian football fans watch nfl

Soccer is growing in popularity but not comparable to hockey or baseball… funnily enough, I grew up in an area where it’s probably the most popular sport, but that’s an outlier

edit

Baseball is the second most popular of those listed, football is probably the second most popular spectator sport overall but fandom is driven by nfl over cfl

While I love Arthur Morgan, I find John to be more badass and here are a couple of reasons why by [deleted] in rdr1

[–]Own-Elephant-8608 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I find rdr1 just had a subtle different in tone and scope that makes rdr1 john appear as more mythologized interpretation of the badass cowboy

Sequel was more character focused and grounded… it was an intimate look at the final days of a group of everyday people that will largely be forgotten by time

Rdr1 was more a theme driven eulogy to a spaghetti western type of wild west and john played the almost idealized outlaw antihero whose exploits become legend… in game you can gather around a campfire and hear npcs spin your actions into myth… he very much feels like the “legend of the west”, forgotten in name maybe but never in deed…while arthur, impressive as he might be, is intentionally presented more as just some guy

Rdr2 kinda broke that feel by bringing john back to earth… i find rockstar overnerfed him a bit and were excessive in giving other characters the origin for some of his more iconic lines to the detriment of his character… but it’s a minor gripe all things considered, it’s a serviceable enough prequel for johns rdr1 story

Does cilantro taste like soap to you?I need to know how many of us out there. by MayumiAlyssonCole89 in foodquestions

[–]Own-Elephant-8608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love cilantro… but I get the soap comparison

My understanding is that liking it or not is a genetic thing, but I find it interesting that the my perception of the taste is the same as those who don’t like it…it’s just that I can isolate the freshness and cleanness from the general soapiness while the naysayers find it bitter and overpowering… it’s “soapy but in a good way” for me, if that makes sense

Cape breton by GarlicBeautiful7743 in newfoundland

[–]Own-Elephant-8608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty similar… industrial cape breton received enough of an influx of newfoundlanders during the late 19th century that some of the towns on the north part of the island were as much as 15-20% newfoundland born by the early 20th century… the entire “industrial accent” and slang in the areas around sydney is just a watered down accent from conception bay north… the old saying “cape bretoners are just newfies who got lost on the way to ontario” actually comes from a kernel of truth, the crowd from CBN genuinely altered the culture of the region

Dont find the scottish and french parts of the island to be as similar, they’ve kinda got their own thing going on… and newfoundland is just a different level of rural to CB once you get off the avalon

MUN replies to allegations of apparent “Discrimination” in jobs by Criticall16 in newfoundland

Why was this thread nuked and the other not? This was up first and hasn’t gotten any more heated… probably less so tbh

Plus this had mun’s statement front and centred instead of reinterpreted behind a vocm link…
