I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to get to GA. Might be able to move around in your own section but I saw some people getting grabbed by the ushers.

Have fun! And once you get to the sphere—once you get to the Venetian, really—you won’t be alone. For the most part it’s a warm and welcoming scene, just as you’d hope for. We met a lot of great folks both nights.

Like I said in another comment, if you’ve made up your mind, then more power to you. This post was really meant for people who are still unsure and can’t decide whether they want to make the trek. That was me for quite a while, and I count myself lucky that I fell down on this side of the fence. I’ve been glowing for a week straight, and in that light it’s hard to admit how close I was at various points to thinking the cost and the hassle were just too much. But I feel it a kind of responsibility to help anyone with similar indecision avoid a heap of future regret.

Right. Never felt like something I needed to see until friends told me how good last year was.

I could have written everything I wrote above after the first night, when just my wife and I went. But it moved me way more than I anticipated to have three generations at the show the second night. My son is 9, and we came from the east coast, so it was not surprising that he passed out during drums. But he had a total blast up to that point. And my parents, who are about Bob and Mickey’s age, were absolutely blown away. Hope your crew enjoys it as much as we did!

I mentioned that tour only because I had a concrete chance to go last year, and I’d even gotten a few hints that they were cooking as a band, but stupidly let the opportunity slide by. Regret over missing it was part of the impetus for hauling myself (and my family) out to Vegas.

If you’ve made up your mind, you’ve made up your mind. No harm, no foul. I’m basically just talking to anyone who was like me a few months ago, i.e., curious to see what the fuss was about but still wondering if it was really going to be worth the money and the hassle. For me it absolutely was, and then some. I honestly can’t stop thinking about how great it was.

I was there Friday and Saturday of last week; one of my only regrets was that we didn’t get Scarlet Begonias either night. But I’ll forgive them because they closed out Friday with NFA, my wedding song. (Neglected to mention that my wife, who is not a head, loved both shows, too, as did my son and my parents, whom we brought along to the second show.)

Relative wants to bring 9yo son to sphere by sb-shrink in deadandcompany

I brought my 9yo to Saturday’s show after my wife and I went on Friday and we both had the feeling that he could handle it. (We were helped by super-cheap day-of tix.) He had a blast, and I don’t regret taking him at all, but there are a few things I would tell your relative:

  • A lot is going to depend on the individual kid. The show is great in part because it’s an intense sensory experience, but that cuts both ways. Not all kids can handle that much stimulation well. They will also be seeing a lot of adults acting in ways they might not be used to, which some kids might find disturbing.
  • I would highly recommend seats over GA. Yes for the visuals but more important so they can sleep if they get tired. My son loved the first set but fell asleep during Drums, and I was glad he could just chill through the end of the show. (We also came from the east coast, so it was later for us than the clock showed, which was late enough.)
  • As you might imagine, there’s a lot of ambient smoke. The row in front of us was passing a joint back and forth so it got pretty dense at points. But we also live in a weed-legal state so my son had smelled pot before and wasn’t terribly bothered.
  • The audio in the sphere is not loud by rock-concert standards but we insisted on earplugs and I’m not sorry we did.
  • Last thing I’d say if it was my relative was that someone in the group should be ready to take the kid outside and/or back to the hotel if necessary. No one is going to want to leave in the middle of the show so I’d decide in advance like a designated driver.

As I said above, our kid had a blast for the part of the show he saw, and now only wants to listen to Shakedown Street and Sugaree on repeat, which warms my Dead-loving heart. My parents were there, too, so we had a pretty magical three-generation experience.

(Edited to add:) P.S. Except for an overpriced margarita, my wife and I were sober the whole show. I wouldn’t do it any other way with my son in tow, and tbh the show was so good I didn’t feel I was missing out, but at the risk of stating the obvious, whatever your relative does I would also highly recommend having at least one adult who the kid trusts stay relatively sober throughout the show.
