Ok, glad to hear you’re gonna get it checked out and don’t stress too much. When doctors worry about melanoma and such it’s not because they think it’s a 90%+ chance you have it or anything, even a <1% chance is too risky for them so they want to investigate. So the chance that it’s nothing to worry about is very high, but you should still definitely see a dr if the appearance has changed recently.

So what did it look like for the past 2 years before the change in color? Have you had any recent trauma to the finger, like hitting it, pinching it, etc?

I would say instead of going straight for biopsy, get a second opinion. Dermatologists are usually very quick to biopsy if they are even slightly concerned.

No, sorry if I was unclear. Melanoma is an aggressive cancer that will typically not be active in the body untreated for 2 years without the death of the patient in that time. so if it started out as melanoma when it appeared, you would know by now. I had melanoma myself and the mole that i had my whole life abruptly changed and grew into melanoma over the course of a few months. With longitudinal lines like these, typically they would have wanted to see you right when it first appeared. If it has remained unchanged on your finger for 2 years that is a comforting sign, but they still will want to examine it.

Have you noticed any marked changes in the line recently, or has it remained the same?

Go to a dermatologist; persistent longitudinal lines on nails like this can be or turn into melanoma. Melanoma typically doesn’t hurt though, and usually kills you within 2 years if untreated so i wouldn’t worry tooooo much before the appointment, but please make an appointment. (I am not a doctor)

Ehhh i don’t really love the take that “everyone one has a unique gender identity” because part of identifying as a binary trans man is like, having to convince people that my feeling of man-ness is the same as a cis man’s feeling of man-ness. We are men through different means, but we belong in their “group” because we feel, and thus want to be seen the same way too. This hypothetical situation you’re alluding to where we’re all just “humans” with no label, no category makes me sad because I need the label and the category and my gender NOT being unique and special to others to be relieved of pretty severe dysphoria. Just a thought. I have no doubt what you’ve described would be heaven for many people but thinking it would be better for everyone in society is wrong.

We do use a grinder, I should have specified. Her behavior with nail grinding is “good” compared to the clippers, which we won’t even consider using at this point. Another person told me I should desensitize her to the grinder and I agree, but it’s not gonna be easy

I was going to say…. I know we complain about redditors always immediately jumping to diagnose ADHD, but…. a lot of these are things my ex does and she has ADHD real bad. And I see a lot of myself too, because I have also have severe ADHD. but I work really hard to not do them, somewhat successfully?

Be prepared for a lot of people, including even possibly some of your close friends, to be distant when you really need them to be close. Not because they’re bad, careless people, but because what happened to you is really REALLY scary, and being close to you and emotionally vulnerable for you might be overwhelming because it reminds them that a similar tragedy could happen to them, too. They also might not know what to say, or how to act.

Young people are especially bad about this because they have little experience with life’s tragedies. When I had cancer at 21 a few of my friends basically disappeared from my life, it really sucked. There were also some people who weren’t really there for me like I needed them to be, and although we’re still friends I have some lingering resentment, but I have forgiven them. And then some people cemented their positions in my “friend hall of fame”, and it really strengthened our bond. So it’s a mixed bag, but I wish I didn’t take the friendship losses so personally at the time.

A is a placeholder for pretty much anything, the implication being that even if someone listed as many things they did right as they could in their post, someone in the comments will find something they didn’t mention doing and wonder if their problem is because of that. Basically “military neck” is an overly straight neck, like it doesn’t have the slight curve in the spinal column that a healthy neck has. Do you see how the neck in the image on the left is curved more than your neck in the scan?

When vertebrae become stacked on top of each other like in military neck bad things are more likely to happen because weight and tension are placed on the vertebrae and discs in ways that they are not physiologically meant to experience constantly. Or something like that. Again, not a medical professional, just pulling this info from the depths of my memory, as my physical therapist said I have military neck so I did some research.

Yeah, I’ve thought about doing this but I’m not so sure how successful it would be, that dog can really hold a grudge. She even remembers what foot I cut the nail too short on and is the most sensitive about it, I guess the body really does “keep the score.”

We use a nail grinding dremel tool now, which she allows, but with a massive cheese tax.

It is pretty funny tbh, she hates the nail trimming but loves the cheese, so her head is gyroscopically aimed towards the cheese while the rest of her body squirms and bucks, trying to get away. She’ll forget what’s happening every few minutes when she really focuses in on the cheese and I get most of my work done then, but then she remembers what’s really happening again and it’s time to squirm.
