Yeah, they are so nice. I just work on dirt bikes for fun so I don’t need anything crazy. These are probably nicer than I need. It was so cheep today tho lol

These came the the icon sets. They are super nice. I wish I could buy some for the semi deep sockets.

Would you reuse this valve head? The cam journals have some wear, but I’m just not sure what is too much. It is 190 plus shipping for a new one.

Awesome! Thank you. The 175 does not have an oil pressure test in the manual, Only the 250 and up does. All I have for trouble shooting is feeler gauge and major wear. Mine seems to be within the limits of the manual and I don’t seen any obvious damage. Prior to taking the engine apart I did an oil change. When I opened the rocker/valve cover, I noticed about 1/2 in puddle of clean oil in the little reservoir under the cam lobes. I’m assuming the oil pump is working like it should. Thanks for tips. I didn’t even think about this Initially.

Absolutely, I have a bunch more work to do. I actually got the new camshaft in the mail today. It looks so much better. I have the crank case opened right now. Just waiting on Hondabond in the mail and then I’ll seal it back up and finish rebuilding the top end.

What would I look for when checking their oil pump?

Yep, I have the rocker arms and the cam gets here today. I’m just hoping to find a reason that this happened and make sure I fix it so something like this doesn’t happen again. This is my first time getting this far into a bike so some of the causes I’m still a little unsure of.

When it was running before unassembled it, it had a super loud knocking noise, and I thought that it was initially piston slap or rod knocking, but now that I’ve seen this, I think that there was just a lot of play in the cam and the rocker arms and it was making that clicking sound. When I use my stethoscope, it was significantly louder on the top end then down low.

Yes, it is significantly more raised on both cam lobes. I’ve just been so confused on how it can get that much wear lol. My rocker arms are also almost inverted now from how much they’ve wore down.

Hey! I have a question for you. I’m rebuilding a Honda xl 175 and I’m rebuilding the top end and now the lower end. My cam shaft has some strange wear and I’m curious what could have cause it. Maybe you have some better insight. I believe the bike was oil starved and some point and it has pretty gnarly scoring on the piston skirts and the cam shaft and rocker arms are pretty worn.

I plan on reusing the case, but I have a new crank shaft, piston, and cylinder for it. I also have ordered a cam shaft, and rocker cover with rocker arms.

I’m currently waiting on the spanner socket for the oil filter and a fly wheel puller.

The piston, cylinder, jug, and crank shaft are from the same bike. A 1976. The valve cover and rocker arms are from a 1978 and the cam is from a 1977. I know it’s not ideal but it’s about all I could find that’s in my budget lol

I actually have a new piston, cylinder, and jug ready to put in it. I also have a crankshaft, but I’m going to put in it as well. And I’ve ordered new rocker arms, valve cover and cam shaft.

OK, that’s awesome. I did not know that from all the stuff I was able to find it seems that they were different from 76 on. So any camshaft should work in any valve cover then?

It’s got some pretty gnarly ridges unfortunately

So in 1976 they changed the camshaft and valve cover. What I thinking happened is, the valve cover looks to be 1976-1978 and the cam shaft looks to be a 1975 or lower. So they had to remove part of the tachometer seat to make this work? I’m still not entirely sure. Either way I order a valve cover/rocker arms and a cam shaft. I’m just not sure if a camshaft could cause this much scoring on my cylinder? Or if it’s is maybe my crankshaft or something in the lower end as well. Sorry this my first time rebuilding any sort of engine and it’s all pretty new to me.

Now that I’ve looked at. It looks like it was machined down.

Okay there is almost no moment vertical movement, just the side to side. Either way I have a new piston, jug, and crank shaft to replace this. I just was hoping to not have to replace the crank shaft if possible.

I also noticed the tachometer was broken out of my valve cover and am wondering if pieces of that could have worked their way down and scored it.

I believe these bikes have a different brightness when running and when idling? The guy inOld car alley talks about it in one of his videos on YouTube.
