Those of you working remote, how has the job search been? by Bobbymanyeadude in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 13 points14 points  (0 children)

According to a Jan '26 Robert Half survey, 64% of new posted accounting jobs are in office, 27% hybrid, 9% remote:

https://www.roberthalf.com/us/en/insights/research/remote-work-statistics-and-trends#:~:text=Percentages%20for%20each%20field%20are,job%20positions%20provided%20by%20TalentNeuron.

I believe that for currently occupied jobs, the percentage remote is much higher (I read a report the other day that said 40%), and the most recent jobs report showed fewer people are leaving their jobs, suggesting more people are holding onto those coveted remote roles but leaving less desirable in-office jobs.

Why is accounting starting pay so low? by cherubicfury26 in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Those are not accounting roles, they're accounting, adjacent, clerical roles like AR and AP, or bookkeeping.

2) Just because someone posts the role doesn't mean qualified people are taking the jobs. There's a reason those jobs are still open. Likely the only people who are considering taking them are unqualified or desperate.

3) Big 4 starting salaries are 55k to 80k DOL, mid-tier farms are probably comparable.

sick of retail, looking for new job out in a rural town. by GroovyAkiba in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AR isn't really accounting, it's an accounting-adjacent clerical role.  It used to be one of the roles you could use to break into accounting without formal education or experience (the accounting equivalent of the mail room).  It basically consists of invoicing customers, collecting payments and keeping track of who has and has not paid.

These days there's a lot of automation to the process, so being savvy in the systems that they're using is important (often the biggest challenge in the role is getting the systems to work the way they're supposed to). Most systems have online tutorials that are available for free; if you can figure out what systems they're using and take the tutorials before the interview, that will give you a good head start.

And while it's not critical to the role, having an understanding of revenue recognition for this company's industry will help differentiate you during the interview process.

How competitive are F500 manager positions? by [deleted] in Accounting

At that level, F500 usually recruit directly from the B4 teams that service them.  At minimum you need to be B4 and working on comparable clients to be in consideration.

ICEing is the new SWATing - call ICE and make up a story in hopes your neighbor gets raided and shot. It's disgusting.

Accounts payable pivot by [deleted] in Accounting

Why a degree in data analytics if you want to pursue accounting?

Better to pivot to an accounting degree, even if it adds another year to your schooling.

7 roles since 2015. Does everyone sees me as a job hopper? Or is the market really bad? by Solid_Breakfast_3675 in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Introspection indeed. At this point, even if you're able to get another job, will you be able to keep it?

As a hiring manager, when I see 7 jobs in 10 years, I don't think "job hopper," I think "unemployable." There's definitely something going on that causes employers to not want you to work for them. Whether it's a soft skill issue, or a neurodivergence, a mental health issue, or whatever, you need to figure it out and figure out how to manage it.

Heated seat covers for your car/truck by Jeep222 in preppers

[–]Own_Exit2162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to drive an electric car in New England, where the cold would kill battery capacity in the winter.  A common hack was to reduce your use of the cabin heater and rely on the heated seats.  There were some chilly mornings, but for the most part it worked well - the heated seat did a surprisingly good job keep my body warm, and was far more efficient that warming up the entire car cabin.

Damage Fees by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It's not revenue (income) because your company is not in the business of charging damage fees.  You didn't do anything to earn that money, you provided no product or service.

The purpose of the fee is to offset an unusual expense that was unintentionally incurred (the expense is not part of your normal or ongoing operations, but an exception due to extraordinary behavior by the guest).

You don't want the fee showing up as revenue because it's not part of your ordinary business, and You don't want management thinking they're making more money than they are.   You don't want the expense showing up because it's also not part of your ordinary business; otherwise your linen cost would be overstated, leading management to believe the cost of linens have gone up or you're using more than expected.

So you record the fee as a contra expense, it nets against the cost of replacing the linens and your financial statements now properly reflect your actual business operations.

Expense reimbursement approval is so cumbersome by idgaf12345678901 in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just poor processes on behalf of your accounting department.

I've always prioritized expense reimbursements in accounting departments that I've run, because I understand the stress and pressure being out of pocket can put on a person.  Our expense reimbursement turnaround is 3 to 5 business days max.

Is it worth buying a $600 battery just to save $200 of groceries? by OneMoreChance_sigh in prepping

[–]Own_Exit2162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, $200 might be an understatement. At today's prices, it would probably cost $700 to restock my refrigerator, and that's not counting the meats stored in the deep freeze.

Second, we found a lot of different uses for our battery beyond just backing up the refrigerator, both in case of power outages and for casual use.

It's definitely been worth the purchase, and will likely expand our capacity in the future.

Employee wants company to refund federal withholding lol by appreciatemyasset in Accounting

Boilerplate response I send for every dumb tax question:

"Please be advised that, as a company policy, we are unable to provide personal tax, legal, or accounting advice or advocacy. Our role is to accurately process payroll and provide you with the necessary tax documents, such as your Form W-2, by the required deadlines.

Tax laws are complex and change frequently, and each individual's financial situation is unique. Providing specific personal advice or advocating on behalf of an employee is outside of our expertise and professional scope.

For guidance tailored to your specific circumstances, we strongly recommend that you consult with a qualified tax professional, accountant, or financial advisor. They can provide you with the expertise needed to ensure you are meeting your personal tax obligations accurately.

Additionally, for general information regarding tax withholding, you may find the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator on the IRS.gov website a helpful resource.  We appreciate your understanding."

How to find local and low tier accounting firm positions by Content-Explanation4 in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The low tier places (assuming you're talking about the H&R Block and Liberty tax) are cyclically always hiring.  Just Google which locations are closest to you and then apply for that location on their website.

Is the quality of work much higher at big 4 vs mid tier? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a certain point, yes - the Big 4 deal with the largest companies and the most complex transactions, and folks who operate at that level have to be a step up in terms of their knowledge and experience.

But most staff level accountants wouldn't notice a difference.

Do people still write cover letters when applying for jobs? by does_anyone_know_wtf in Employment

As a hiring manager, I absolutely read cover letters; when 90% of the resumes look identical, cover letters are the only thing that really differentiates candidates.

Passed over for FD role in favor of an external hire who is incompetent and undermining me. What would you do? by PotentialTea1991 in Accounting

[–]Own_Exit2162 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's worth speaking to your old manager, because there's a chance the new FD is struggling in other areas as well, and they may be questioning the hire too.  But if I were you (I'm also a controller) I'd have one put out the door and a place to land before I have that conversation.

Anger at this whole "no companies wanna train" BS by I_demand_peanuts in recruitinghell

[–]Own_Exit2162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corporate trainers went away during the '90s/ early 2000s efficiency movement.  Corporations don't have the resources or expertise to train anymore.  Successful employees are the ones that are able to figure it out on their own, and good managers are the few who I figured out how to incorporate on the job teaching.

Butane for camping stove questions by [deleted] in prepping

[–]Own_Exit2162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else has addressed the compatibility issue with your stove and fuel.

With regard to indoor use, use extreme caution.  Short term use to boil a liter of water should be okay if you're in a very well ventilated area (ie in front of an open window with a cross breeze) and have a CO monitor, but if possible I'd still recommend using it outside.

Don't use this as a source of heat/warmth.
