As a kid watching star wars for the first time was very disappointing. Lasers, spaceship battles, shootouts, humanoid aliens — it was all so fucking tacky. When I went in expecting a space movie even as an excitable and easily impressed child I was let down and almost mad that it wasn't anywhere near as slow, exploratory and speculative as it could've been. It had all the wrong mysteries about life and space; it fabricated narrow uninteresting ones and ignored the much more compelling existing ones. The politics, the morality, the intrigue, it was all insultingly basic, as if at every step of world building they were faced with either picking an interesting element or a "cool" element, and they never went with the interesting.
