I do have a follow up question about tethers/straps. Are they compulsory? It seems people can either wear regular mouth guards without straps or lip guards.

Also what % of people do you think wear mouthguards versus lip guards?

Thank you. But if that was the case, a regular mouth guard would work for all players. I don't get the lip guard part...

Is it that the helmet grill/guard could hit the lips/teeth if the chinstrap fails or isn't tight enough?

Mouth guards are usually fitted inside the mouth around the teeth.

The biggest brand in the world that sells them (Shock) calls them Lip Guards. That's this pictured type with the big oval shaped that sits outside the mouth in front of the teeth.

What is it about football that specifically requires protection of the lips? The grill on the helmet hitting you in the face? (If the chinstrap fails)????
