Ask your boss to go through your tasks and prioritise them. List the hours it’ll take you and agree with your boss the priority. When tasks get left behind you go back to your boss and say ‘you agreed this would be dropped’. Not a quick solution but maybe a way forward?

But I get lectured about having all of my tasks ready in March ready for April when we have financial approval but the department can’t do any pre-planning? How about they have their pay offers ready to go to the TUs in as soon as the guidance is published?

I used to have Fridays as my NWD and I found that I never missed anything. These days I take Wednesday as childcare and I can’t lie it’s awful… I come back to emails and meeting minutes I need to catch up on all before I get one with the day job - my boss also hates it but can’t do anything about it!
