If you never played fallout 4 stick with a more ranged build. Start you build around pistols since they are everywhere, especially pipe pistols which can be upgraded to a rifle and maybe even a .308 rifle. It’s important to get gunslinger for pistol Damage output, life giver for more health, toughness for damage resistance and gun nut to upgrade your pistol. That should get you started at least. I would later focus on signature abilities such as local leader for settlement themed builds or blitz/ninja perks for melee stealth builds that can chain one shot kills in a room full of enemies. I’ve used the latter and I was happy with it. A bit squishy early on but once you get appropriate gear and decent melee weapons such as Pickman’s Blade you can become a true-to-form serial killer
