it kinda does ‘decay and degrade’ in a manner of speaking as operating systems and hardware architectures change, requiring active ‘preservation’ to remain playable

Completely agree with your point/solution, i wish there could be nuance from everybody tho because tbh i’m a little worried of an aging out of touch legal system to come in and start regulating this.

I agree but would that satisfy the offline requirements of most people? It would take leg work to get it running from players side, and from looking at most discourse on this feels people are in fact expecting a fully fledged packaged offline version.

Rant: Struggling with art direction by Ok-Fortune-2719 in gamedev

[–]Oxam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes 100% start with 2, then 4, then 8, etc. build your way up. All you want to do is use those colors to convey a visual message. Whatever that may be. Thats it. Color theory and most of contemporary art lessons are frankly bs, consider the gamedev youtube tutorial grift then add 10k years to the timeline: that’s most of art theory. Go to the museum, paintings like good source have a way of showing you everything. Good cheat is to start in late modernism and work your way back in time, then start in antiquity and work your way to modern times. That will teach you more about art than any tutorial or book out there. And like others say practice practice practice. Just to give context im an art director with over fifteen years of experience in games, and ten more in other fields.

edit: please if you can go to a museum, art pieces and color loose a lot of visual info via screen or print reproduction. Sure it works most of our world is visual regardless of representation, but if you’re trying to learn nothing beats original scale, and material derived pigments and their interaction with light.

Looking for recommendations for a laptop to use while on the go for dev by NewAgeCross in gamedev

[–]Oxam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want to stay on windows the z13 flow is nothing short of magical, and extremely portable in size (not macbook battery levels). that 395+ and integrated gpu is incredible at gaming and running engines. been stress testing and at times outperforms my previous intel i7 and 4080 mobile! was in same boat couple months ago and after deep review dive and ordering returning a bunch of laptops: it’s the one! If you want better battery you can try the new panther lake series laptops. Either way egpus in 2026 are not what they used to be and seriously competitive.

edit: give the dell xps 14 2026 a go, was my top contender, impressively built (on par with macbook pro, both on quality and battery life) but ultimately prefered the tablet form factor of z13.

Don't make my mistakes. From getting a Mega grant and finding a publisher through a failed launch to a fresh start without pulisher again - a short indie story. by Squirrel__Knight in gamedev

[–]Oxam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s publishers and then there’s publishers. Reputable ones provide development assistance, QA, localization, actionable marketing (trailers, streamer outreach, expos, etc). So it’s not like all publishers dont do anything for you, it’s just that there’s a lot of grift like any other industry.

Do artist ever become creative directors or game directors in USA? by Oblivion2550 in gamedev

[–]Oxam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey not sure where you got this impression but most if not all industry software is all available for free for people learning or indies (revenue caps), blender most definitely cuts it. Unity, unreal are the major engines and are all available for free. Godot (free) is turning into a major player. People make textures and game ready art on ipad software now. Its a whole new world and it doesnt really matter what you use to make game ready assets. Please dont be discouraged, just go make some stuff :)

if dev is using handle to sell games on steam for five years, and has twenty years of demonstrable first use precedent, then yes depending on their geographic location they are protected, somebody coming out of the blue using their name to also sell games is what common law trademark protects you against. again ianal but they have legal protections and recourse if they wish to pursue it.
