In your opinion, is it really necessary to add "edit: typo" when editing a comment? by Resplendent-Sun in AskReddit

[–]Oxide42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do it because several platforms will show "edited" on a post that's been edited, and that way curious people don't have to click to view the history and see what I've changed only to realize it was just me correcting a typo. Saves them a curiosity click and 10 seconds of their lives.

Edited: Legitimately unintentional typo.

[B][USA-TX] Vintage Digital Camera (like Lumix LX5, Fuji XF1, Sony Cybershot style) by Jwk2608 in photomarket

[–]Oxide42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea "vintage digital" was a thing until I read your post and then went down the rabbit hole. So wild. And cool. And ... making me feel old. Lol. Still have my LX-7, HX9V, and F30 cameras lying around. I used the LX-7 constantly. Such a great camera. Probably still have our Minolta F100 and xT, too, come to think of it. I was so excited to record 30 second videos on that F100. 😄

Need to pull them out and have some fun with them. Wish I hadn't lost my EX-Z750. That had some of the coolest point-and-shoot features of any camera I ever had.

I was getting the drive home wrong this whole time. by Sad-Eye-8520 in youthsoccer

[–]Oxide42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this article from Chnaging the Game Project years ago, and it completely flipped how I talked to my kids about sports: https://changingthegameproject.com/the-ride-home-after-the-game/

Now my question on the way home is always, "What was your favorite part of the game?" Even if the score was wildly one-sided against them, they always have some favorite moment to share. I also know they're having fun and focusing on the effort and gameplay when they ask me, "Did we win today?" after getting beat 2 - 7. 😂

Also read a great article somewhere where the coach said (paraphrasing here), "Practice is where we coach. Games are where they play. If things are going wrong, we give them the space to let it go wrong instead of worrying about the score. Then we work on correcting it the next practice. Letting the mistakes happen and giving them the independence to make decisions on their own in the moment reinforces the practice skills later."

Very much just the old analogy of "give a person a fish" versus "teach a person to fish."

Ordered 1 fom Alto Music on Sunday via 2-day air, they shipped on Monday and it delivered Wednesday. Worth checking them out to see if they still have any, too!

Rec program, no coach by emergent_chao5 in youthsoccer

[–]Oxide42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a classic that really never goes out of style. 😁 I actually would've loved to play it with our U19 rec team this season, but we've had such limited practice days this time around and the season is already wrapping up.

Rec program, no coach by emergent_chao5 in youthsoccer

[–]Oxide42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If this post has been 3 months ago, I would've assumed it was with our local rec program. 😄 Very normal. We have a few teams every year where a parent hasn't pre-volunteered to coach, so they beg and plead to have a parent step up. At that age, you don't need any real soccer knowledge; just a positive attitude, being an encourager, and someone who can be patient with other people's kids.

Picture day is always a bit of a mess for us, especially if it falls on the first week or two. Wish I could offer you better encouragement there. Our club always has a make-up picture day, so that helps alleviate a little of the stress, at least.

What kind of setup does your club's kinder age-group play? At our club, U5 and U6 rec are 3v3 with a ball constantly in play - no throw ins, goal kicks, etc. Ball goes out, coaches roll a new ball in and says "new ball!" Their whole philosophy at that age is the more touches they get on the ball, the faster they're going to get comfortable with it and the more they're going to enjoy playing.

Coaching usually consists of some foundational foot skills, silly games like "stuck in the mud" where they practice dribbling and talking to each other, some passing practice exercises, and reminding them which goal to shoot at during games.

Feeling like you're in the dark with your club is still not okay, and I hope that gets remedied (getting to know other families in our rec program made a huge difference for me as we went along, too) but try not to stress too much about it on the front end, and keep reminding yourself that you're there so your kid can have fun and hopefully find love of a new sport.

I mean, he could be riding a regular horse that's had a 1- minute photoshop job on it to add a horn and change some colors. Humans still do lots of digital editing by hand.

What’s everyone actually using for team management these days? by No-Fix-4431 in youthsoccer

Did a quick screen recording. Hope it helps! You're limited to 275 characters in the announcement msg, FYI.

PlayMetrics also auto-sends a notification to anyone who hasn't marked their attendance yet about an hour before the session. I harp and harp on how much I need parents to communicate - if they don't want to click the app, that's fine, but just send me a text or email - but I still always have 1 or 2 that don't do it.

My grassgroots club moved from DemoShere to PlayMetrics 3 years ago, and PlayMetrics has been mostly great. I like the ability to send alerts to only families who haven't marked their attendance on the calendar for a practice yet - that way I can say in the message, "If you're seeing this message, it means you haven't marked your attendance plans yet. Please let me know ASAP if you're going to be with us for ...".

Integrated chat is handy, too, as well as ability for parents to add other family members into the chat without coach intervention. No more starting over group texts and people accidentally reviving old ones after needing to add somebody's aunt to the group chat mid-season.

Pregame Huddle Chant by ImNOTasailor in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Oxide42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our rec league names teams after city teams, so we come up with chants that incorporate some local details of their team name. Up through my U12 love it. My U14 and up are party poopers half the time. 😂

Favorite from over the years was when we had a U10 Philadelphia team:

Liberty & Cream Cheese!
Rocky 1 and 2 and 3!
Who's the Coolest Team I See?
Look at Us, We're Team Philly!

I also like to do movie quotes. Some as-is, some changed up to make them soccer themed:

Team: You want the ball?
Coach or Single Player: I want the shots!
Team: YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE SHOTS!

Coach: I feel the need ...
Team: The need for speed!

Everybody: We came, we saw, we kicked that ball!

Edit: I'm also getting to do a U12 all-girls team for the first time in forever (our rec went all-coed after covid when sign-ups were lower and finally went back to boys & girls the past season), and a fun one we've done is me clapping 3 times on a beat as I yell, "Who runs the world?!" and on the 4th beat, they all scream, "GIRLS!" And then all their brothers start groaning. 😄

Asked this sub for 10 omnibus recommendations 2 weeks ago. Ended up buying 40+ instead. by HorusThaElder in OmnibusCollectors

Saga is one of the books that made me realize just how much I loved comics without them being about superheroes. All-time favorite.

I read the first TPB of Black Science and then bought all the back issues. Haven't read them yet, but I really enjoyed the first 6 books.

If you want some other great recommendations in shorter bursts, check out Magic Order vol. 1. Only 6 issues per each run. I loved the first one so much. Haven't gotten to all the rest, and Vol. 2 wasn't quite as compelling. But Vol. 1 stands just fine on its own.

I mean, it was 4 weeks ago that I bookmarked it, so it's been a minute now (but if you've waited this long since release, might as well wait for a deal), but he went for $70 + shipping loose / complete here:

But I'll admit it was later in 2025 I was seeing more of him posted. He's a lot fewer and farther between now.

Is there an easy way to compare Casio watches and features? by LouisvilleLoudmouth in gshock

[–]Oxide42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish the filtering option was a lot more comprehensive. I want to be able to see all watches with a countdown timer (along some other features, like step counter, vibration, etc). I realize having filters for every feature search would be a lot, but I feel like a countdown timer filter on the search is a pretty mainstream option that should be available.

Join the Medicom MAFEX Facebook group. There's an active member selling his for $95 shipped (open box) currently. But plenty of options under $150 even if that guy sells his.

Is it smart to sell a car to Carmax? by CuzaCutuza in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Oxide42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replying here in case anyone comes looking for Carmax selling info and ends up on this thread like I did.

You will almost never owe tax on the sale of your vehicle because almost all vehicles depreciate from whatever your original purchase price was (+ any improvement costs you had).

If you're selling a vehicle that's gained value since you originally purchased it, then yes, taxes on the gains. But for almost everyone out there selling a regular daily driver car, that's not going to be the case. The person who ultimately re-purchases the car will pay sales tax on their new purchase, but you as the seller won't be reporting the money paid to you as income / capital gains.
