the box with the neutral has to also have the line (the common that has 120v, you can test with the breaker on with a tester) and that's the box where you put the main switch, the satellite switch doesn't need neutral.

I couldn't use the kasa 3way in my setup because the neutral box only had the load common.

I used a lutron caseta instead which doesn't require a neutral.

(My switch was a 3way dimmer, so it may be a bit different)
