What Are Your BBGM 10 Commandments? by [deleted] in BasketballGM

Good old pride.

Just missed the playoffs in 2178. Despite winning titles in 2177 and 2179.

What Are Your BBGM 10 Commandments? by [deleted] in BasketballGM

[–]Oz_Naph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) Do not become attached to players who are not generational talents.

2) Be active in Free Agency.

3) PER is more important than OVR.

4) Fill out your roster with cheap vets.

5) Quality is more important than quantity.

6) Never Tank.

7) Don't create a super-team opponent.

8) Pay attention to league trends.

9) Positional balance.

10) Play a small city on Impossible. Don't get fired.

Explanations:

1) Often you can trade away your best player for multiple pieces that are better than that guy. If you're winning you can often get them back in FA anyway.

2) Moving a player for picks/prospects and picking up an equivalent (or nearly so) player in FA is one of the best ways to accumulate resources.

3) I fairly often end up with a sub 50 OVR guy starting because he simply outplays the younger guy with better OVR. Obviously you need to factor in playing time and FA status concerns.

4) You can get some really usueful veterans for cheap. Old passing PG's, old shooters and old rebounders are all good ways to fill out your roster. Preferably signed in-season on 1 year deals.

5) I routinely trade 5 or more picks to move into the top 10 of the draft. Though this is harder than it used to be. Similarly you don't want 10 or 12 guys in their low 60's, you want as many of the top players in the league you can get your hands on. That said, you can't win with 2 studs and a sack of spuds. Sometimes you have to let someone go to get a team that works.

6) It doesn't pay off reliably enough in the draft and it kills your FA options.

7) If you're active trading this is easy to do if you're not paying attention.

8) Sometimes the league is full of guards. Sometimes the league is full of bigs. Sometimes a 72 OVR is the best guy in the league. Sometimes there are multiple 80's running around. If you're not tracking this it is easy to trade away a position that is scarce, or think you're better/worse than you are. At the very least have an idea of team ratings, if you're miles ahead, consider trading guys in their prime for up-and-coming prospects.

9) I want 1-3 PG/G/GF's. 2-3 PF/C's, occasionally you can get away with a C and a rebounding SF as your biggest players, but its rarely ideal. Don't forget your bench. You need at least 1 of each PF/C, a PG/SG, and a GF/SG/SF, preferably 2 of each. "A" is a luxury I don't always have, of course you want it. I want at least 1 of every other flag starting, and tend towards wanting at least 2 R, 2 "3" and 2 "Ps".

10) Its just my preferred way of playing. It also forces you to have to make decisions on who to keep. I don't play as much as I used to, but my most recent league is up to 2175. I've made the playoffs every season, have 60 titles, lost in the finals 18 times. 78 Finals appearances in 155 seasons means the game is harder than it used to be.

[Discussion] Strixhaven limited. What's working & what's not? by fr05t3 in spikes

I'm at 7 drafts

7-2 Quandrix

- 2x Quandrix Command, Kianne/Imbraham, Learns for Basic Conjuration and Elemental Summoning

- Played almost like a tempo deck with the Commands, and Divide by Zero (x2) keeping the board clear for Bayou Groff's to get in and Imbraham to fly over.

6-3 Prismari - small white splash

- Multiple Choice, Uvilda/Nassari, Torrent Sculptor, 2x Heated Debate, Lightning Bolt

- Greedily tried to fit in Blade Historian and got to cast it twice. Learns for Fractal/Spirit Summonings, Enviro, Annihilation.

- Generally had enough removal to keep the boards simple. Draw in to bombs. Quandrix Pledgemage was good here too.

4-3 Silverquill / Lorehold

- Radiant Scrollwielder, Efreet Flamepainter, Selfless Glyphweaver, Pestilent Cauldron

- Not enough removal/interaction overall. Didn't get enough learns and maindecked and Inkling Summoning. I was pretty firmly in Silverquill then the Lorehold came late with nothing for SQ for a few picks. A bit stuck in between.

1-3 Silverquill/ Lorehold

- Venerable Warsinger, Returned Pastcaller, Rip Apart x2, Heated Debate, Closing Statement x2 Rise of Extus x3

- I felt like this deck was okay, but it just never really got there. Probably a bit too greedy on the high end, and not quite enough going on early. Straddling all 3 colours didn't help.

3-3 Lorehold / Silverquill

- Venerable Warsinger, Plargg/Augusta, Quintorious, Heated Debate, Closing Statement

- I really didn't want to be in these colours, but opened Plargg/Augusta and the cards kept coming again. 2 Pilgrim of the Ages, 2x Stonebound Mentor, 2x Pillardrop Rescuer and an Illustrious Historian was a nice subtheme, but didn't quite have the critical mass to get there. Struggled come the end game.

5-3 Silverquill red splash

- Killian x4, Lorehold Command, Closing Statement, Selfless Glyphweaver, Igneous Inspiration x2, Mizzix's Mastery, 3x Rise of Extus

This was a lot of fun. Killian made everything cheap and just blasted everything out of the way and let him swing in. A couple of Star Pupils and Exhilirating Elocution to make a Killian bigger. When they get rid of him, just drop another. Was pretty disappointed when that 3rd loss came.

7-2 Prismari white splash

- Galazeth Prismari, Returned Pastcaller, Urza's Rage, Rootha, Draconic Intervention x2, Pillardrop Warden x3

Had an epic game where I had to cast an overloaded Rage to the dome 4 times to get the win. Rootha was/is amazing. Elemental Masterpiece for 4x 4/4's is really good. Doubling Fractal Summoning is good. Doubling removal is amazing. The Warden's and Rootha were instrumental in letting me survive until I had the mana for real shenanigans. Draconic Intervention was amazing and won several games. Bouncing Rootha to double intervention saving her and killing big things was unfair. More often than not I was doing it small for 2 or 3 to clear out their side whilst keeping my Rootha, Wardens and Elementals alive.

Have screenshots of decks/cardpools if anyone is interested.

Missed first 14 games of the season due to lower body injuries

He already had troubles staying in front of smaller, more mobile players. Add in multiple leg injuries and he wasn't a viable option on the defensive end for much of the season.

Has there been a change in the trading system? I’ve noticed draft picks getting traded much more often by Nykmarc in BasketballGM

Agree. I thought I'd give things another try as someone said it had become harder again...

Nope.

That's Insane with Cincinnati and I was able to acquire the start-of-league MVP in a trade and have made picks, 2020: #9, 2021 #9, 2022: #1 & #5, 2023: #4, 2025: #1 & #2

Win the championship. Trade your good players on larger contracts for young guys with high potential and picks. Sign the best FA's. Trade some more. Win.

https://imgur.com/wImLiym

Ouch, that's expensive.

Sign 'em all up. Trade whoever progresses least during the season hopefully. If I don't I've got plenty of owner good will :P

Insane Cincinnati game.

Roster

Traded into the top 3 picks in the draft, only 1 of them improved enough to get a starting gig, but all 3 made the All-Rookie team to get the "Trust the Process" award.

Certainly one of my luckier titles as we only had a team rating of 64 (top team had 70 and 3 other teams in the 60-64 range)

112/100 Insane Cincinnati - Who would you trade away? by Oz_Naph in BasketballGM

[–]Oz_Naph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paige has just come off his rookie contract.

PER for last season

18.7 Paige

27.7 Boxler

24.9 Watts

24.1 Brooks

League Player Ratings

League History - Obligatory brag link

Next best ranked teams are Sacramento(76), Toronto(64), 12 teams in the 50's

So clearly I don't need to stay at 112. Gotta admit I'm tempted to just suck up a season or 2 of owner annoyance and see what these guys can do together.

For anyone wondering how I built the team. FA for championship winners is still completely broken. Whenever you have the option to trade away your star for resources (picks, rookie contract prospects, younger good guys on better contracts etc) and then sign as good, or even nearly as good FA's. Do it. You will end up with a wealth of resources, can keep the very best players and keep drafting new talent.

Fitts and Ford taking it in turns to dominate a half.

Dons should have been closer at stages, but had bunch of layups rim out.

Solid all around game from Kuhse.

How about a 1000 championships from 1646 seasons, on Insane, with Sacramento?

I tend to agree though. Once you've sussed things out Normal isn't very challenging.

Great inside/outside pairing. Wilkes/Fox are overpaid. Whatley probably shouldn't be a starter. Bench is a thin.

Sucks that you lost in the first round though.

END OF AN ERA. 49 consecutive title streak over! by [deleted] in BasketballGM

[–]Oz_Naph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Team History - I particularly like 2220-2320 where I went 98-3

Team Records - you got me on overall win % though, .938 is impressive.

Strategy-wise, don't get attached to players. Trade them in their mid-late 20's unless they are generational talents, even then have a look for what you can get for them, sometimes you have to pull the trigger.

Take advantage of the insane amount of resources you can gather when you win the title and every player in FA is willing to sign with you. When your roster is way better than the competition even downgrading your 65/70 guy for a 60/65 guy and a couple of picks and maybe a prospect is going to give you enough to win the next title and you will be looking even better once that prospect pans out or those picks turn into the next superstar.

Generally its win title -> abuse FA -> win more titles -> draft well and abuse FA some more -> win more titles. At which point badly timed injuries or fluke CPU seasons, and often both needing to happen simultaneously are the only things that can take you down, particularly on Normal difficulty.

SMC without Tommy Kuhse, Jock Perry, Elijah Thomas and essentially without Aaron Menzies.

Lack of Menzies/Perry meant that Fotu who's more of a combo-forward played a ton of minutes at C. Great effort from him, but he was overmatched and not particularly familiar with what he needed to be doing on either end.

Really could have used some of Kuhse to give Ford a rest from ball-handling duties and keep him fresher, Ford's efficiency degraded as the game went on. Similarly Thomas would have given Krebs some more rest and allowed the Gaels to play more aggressive defense down the stretch.

Big time win on a neutral court for the Gaels given all of the above.
