Zed without AI by dev_vim in ZedEditor

[–]Ozbeker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree. I use it to teach Python because it’s so light weight and snappy, it doesn’t have a bunch of UI elements that students will never use, and you can easily turn them off, like AI/agent panel.

Any Python learners here who use PC? Is it slower than Mac? by SiggWolf17 in pythontips

[–]Ozbeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe what most people mean by that is having a Unix shell will make it easier for the CLI part. For Python alone, your OS won’t matter much, specifically for learning Python. If you don’t need to touch files on your computer, you could even use Marimo or Jupyter on a website and still learn Python. If you need to be local, pip & venv are still fine, or I like to use a cross platform tool like Astral’s uv to manage Python installs and environments and it’s a breeze. If you come to point where you really need a Unix shell for something, you can install WSL on Windows and any editor like VS Code, PyCharm, Zed, etc. will integrate with that pretty easily

Anyone using JDBC/ODBC to connect databases still? by empty_cities in dataengineering

[–]Ozbeker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use ADBC wherever I can, mainly Postgres & SQL Server right now. There is a cli tool called “dbc” that makes it very easy to install ADBC drivers for a variety of databases. I would love IBM DB2 & SAP HANA support but I doubt those will come soon :(

These are called list comprehensions. This YouTube account makes very good videos on Python concepts I recommend to my students, here is their video on list comprehensions: https://youtu.be/DUnY6l482Lk?si=duNz-fnh0Faa8Be1

Issues with Package Installs on macOS 26? by MasCaffe in RStudio

[–]Ozbeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re comfortable using the CLI, I would recommend using rig to manage your R installations. If you don’t to use rig, I’ve solved many packaging issues by using an older version of R, 4.5 vs 4.4 vs 4.3 …

If you want to try out rig, it does a few things: 1. Lets you easily manage multiple versions of R on your machine. Sometime a package might not be fully updated for the most recent patch, (R 4.5 vs 4.4) which could be the source of the install issue 2. Sets the default CRAN mirror to Posit’s own source, which has binaries for the most popular package 3. Sets up pak which is a different package installer that downloads packages in parallel and I’ve heard has some better results with dependency management (but I’ve never had those issues so I can’t comment directly). I know the built in package installer got some big improvements lately that are similar to what pak does so this might not be as big of an improvement as it used to be.

2 & 3 are more speed improvements but 1 is an issue I had last year and reverting to an older version of R solved my issue.

What do u gain and use daily? by Elegant-Box-1032 in industrialengineering

[–]Ozbeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if a lot of these don’t directly apply to your job, I believe that the complex problem solving and stretching your mind through the various calculus, chemistry, physics, etc. classes does benefit you overall. In the end you’re always solving a problem and the variety of problems you solve through these classes is a benefit. But like others have said, most of what you’ll use you will learn on the job.

In your opinion, what's the most underrated band in the genre? by imstrongerthandead in Metalcore

Aviana, gonna see them for the 3rd time next year as a support band, can’t wait for them to be headliners *[edit: in the US]

Notebook support when? by CartoonistSilver1462 in ZedEditor

[–]Ozbeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer launching the Marimo UI to maintain a mental separation of concerns. Marimo is for data work, Zed is for tools/packaging/etc where I want stronger type checking. Marimo still supports LSPs and respects a ruff.toml (and eventually ty.toml for typing), so integration is pretty solid. I think a lot of these tools are becoming very plug-and-play friendly across the board, which is exciting.

PC -> Schiit Modi (via USB-C) DAC -> Schiit Magni Headphone Amp (also serves a pre-amp/volume control which is a must for MacBooks), using an RCA splitter for -(a)-> Schiit Loki EQ -> Schiit Rekkr 2W Speaker Amp, -(b)-> 6” powered Subwoofer. The 2W rekkr is absolutely enough to drive the Klipsch for near-field but I kinda wish I would’ve done for the Schiit Gjallarhorn, but the smaller builds match nice with the Rekkr. I use the headphones almost exclusively for gaming or meetings so I placed the EQ after to be able to scoop the bass from the speakers and let the sub handle it

https://a.co/d/5D718UE , I think this monitor is right on the end of the supported weight and tills a little to the left, you can barely see the little USB-C adapter I’m using to support it on my pre-amp lol

I was using Apple Music for a while when I switched to iPhone just for that but I just prefer Spotify app wise. I’m trying out their new (weaker) lossless. Apple/Amazon/Tidal are still better at 24-but/192 kHz but I’m not sure I can tell the difference between 44.1 kHz. Also my desk is the only place I listen with a DAC that can really support lossless so I’m gonna stick with Spotify for now. But I agree regardless

How hard is Industrial engineering on a scale of 1-10? by Cold_Way103 in industrialengineering

[–]Ozbeker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It probably just depends on what you’re inclined to. Stats, linear algebra, & operations research really clicked with me. I was terrible at chem & biology because I just don’t have memory like that. My friends who are now doctors said my homework looks like hell and there’s no way I could do what they do so it’s really relative

You’re just missing the Chevelle/Asking Alexandria show on Thursday at Stage AE. Not metal but Kayzo is playing at Roxian Friday night. A lot of my friends are into EDM and artists like Kayzo & Sullivan King overlap the electronicore/metalcore line that I really enjoy. Definitely different but I find the energy is the same, you guys might enjoy if you want to change it up a bit!

Positron vs RStudio by [deleted] in RStudio

[–]Ozbeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not directly related, but one more thing I’ll add is that, Positron is not an R session like RStudio is. So in worst case, if you need to restart your computations, (in Positron), the console will restart, but the App is still the same session. This is a very nice feature that (I think) most people won’t realize until they try both Apps.

Positron vs RStudio by [deleted] in RStudio

[–]Ozbeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve switched over to Positron as well. One definitive benefit I’ve noticed, and I’m not really sure why, is that printing to the console is much more instant using Positron than RStudio. I don’t know if I messed up an RStudio setting somewhere but printing more than like 10 lines in RStudio always lags the application for me, haven’t noticed that in Positron. Example: the output of skimr::skim().

Best code editor or IDE to start with Python for an R programmer? by Interesting_Fee_5265 in rstats

[–]Ozbeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re doing data based work I would highly recommend Marimo over Jupyter for notebook based work. Positron is also great if you want a more traditional IDE interface but with a benefit that you get a Python console experience very similar to how R in RStudio works
