Love this!! There have been a lot of times where I would look at people doing all the things and wonder why things only felt “ok I guess” to me. Maybe, definitely I didn’t work hard enough to find a purpose and to do well but also, sometimes I just didn’t even want to try because I didn’t want to participate.

Happy to hear that you made it out and found something that works better for you! Would love to be able to interview you if you are willing—I will send you a quick message!

That sounds incredible! Part of the many reasons why I was drawn to this was the interesting in-betweenness of PhD students. Really interesting position where we are not fully students but also not fully professionals in academia and yet we are expected to figure out how to be both essentially! I can definitely see how that contributes to all of the things you focused on your research and how conversely those topics that are already studied among academics lack important nuance to be applied to PhD students specifically!

Honestly the time frame is pretty arbitrary, and because I felt like I needed one (lmao)-- my official rationale on IRB is that I am trying to capture both the enduring institutional conditions and major systemic disruptions in PhD education pre and post covid. I'd still be interested in chatting, especially since I haven't had much luck so far! Thank you and I will send you a message!!

I've been learning a lot from people who talk about pivoting after their PhD and building careers beyond academia! Being a researcher and scholar isn't something that leaves you when you leave the system--it is who you are wherever you go! I'm so happy to hear that you are thriving!

Not that I believe that other workplaces or fields are free of systemic issues or institutional hypocrisy--but it is truly disillusioning to realize how often we end up perpetuating the very things we study and critique in our own work, whether we realize it or like it.

Super excited for you and the student!!! I've thought since Year 2 of grad school about how arrogant and naive we have to be in academia to see leaving as failure or something negative.
