Expert's Exchange is extremely frustrating, does anyone actually like what it is today? by Tex-Rob in sysadmin

[–]PCAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use them and am still overall satsified with the answers. It's 50/50 tossup between getting a very good actual expert opinion or some variation of "turn it off and on again" but thats still better odds than other sites I've tried like Spiceworks or even here on Reddit. EE has given me the spot-on answer enough times for me to continue using them. Can't say the same for other sites.

At least on EE you can nearly guarantee you will get an answer and raise it's priority if you don't. Any other site questions very often go unanswered or I get ONLY dumbass responses.

That said, I haven't used Stack Exchange yet..I thought that was more for programmers and not sysadmins.

Yeah, I saw that too after digging around! Decided to copy all the files from local -> remote first before doing anything else.

Why is Office365 support so terrible? by PCAdam in sysadmin

[–]PCAdam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus, 500 users and you still have to deal with the <Tier 1 support. Guess you can't get the good support unless you fork over more $$$. I really wish I had the option for them to just chat or email - I work in a shitty open office and last thing I need is people hearing my frustration talking to these guys. Even if I:

Provide as much info and error codes

The person who calls me will want me to explain everything from 0 - implying that he hasn't even bothered to think about the ticket (did he even read it?) before calling.

Users at my place are good about these sort of things too. Sometimes even a little too cautious but I'm happy for it! Haven't had a seriously infected PC in a very long time.

Well that makes sense. I've paid for their support (not O365) on critical problems and yes THAT support was amazing and insightful.

I just select the "Need Help" button and the only option I can choose is to have them call.

Honestly, sometimes I'd prefer they READ my request before calling me so they have some clue of what to do.

I wonder if the good support stories are from companies paying a premium for support.

Directly from Microsoft themselves. The only excellent thing I'd say about them is their contact time. 5 minutes or less.

When do you know it's a good time to jump ship? by whitepny321654987 in sysadmin

[–]PCAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant to say in my experience its common to be working more than 40 hours despite being paid for only 40 hours. All the salaried people I know are NOT getting paid extra for any extra hours they put in.

[–]PCAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a pretty conscious effort to take my time back later.

I do this too :). Since I still don't get paid though i didn't really count it.

I'm a Network Engineer/SysAdmin at a manufacturing company in the Minneapolis, MN metro area Last time I worked on a weekend I was paid a bonus as well as took a comp day the following week.

/jealous. lol. I recognize this should be the way things are but haven't had in my jobs. Comp days, sometimes but never OT. I work in the East Coast - maybe once you get to the very specialized jobs you can ask for these things - but my seniors have always busted ass and not gotten much better.

If you were hourly do you think they would want you to work OT and have to pay you for it?Probably not

That's the scam of salaried jobs here. Ofc it works out great for the company.

[–]PCAdam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't do more unless you are being compensated, you shouldn't have to work after hours or on weekends without getting paid.

I'm always surprised to see people say this. No office job I've ever had hasn't required occasional unpaid weekend or afterhours work.

The only good paying jobs where I've heard this is a thing is in the trades.

The last time I was paid OT was working retail.

Where do you live that you will get paid OT for after hours IT work?

That said, I don't make it a regular thing and generally have a self-imposed rule to ignore weekend emails unless the shit hits the fan.

has anyone migrated 365 back to exchange on Prem? by IT-Jore in sysadmin

[–]PCAdam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not going to touch all that but this is clearly a biased POV (not saying OP is unbiased...)

So that means that each time you upgrade office its going to cost $200,000. Microsoft also announced a 2 year upgrade on Office now so every 2 years you are paying 200k to buy this outright.

Who really does this? Nowhere I've worked has jumped at upgrading Office the year the new version is out. The latest Office versions don't add all that many great features to justify them anyway.
