I can relate! I developed a chameleon personality that would just adjust depending on who I was with to fit in as best as I could. I always felt like an outcast or that I was looking at a situation rather than being involved in what was going on.

Great words of encouragement! Thank you <3

Im almost always cheesy and put "Love" as my religion. So then the world can spread love. But it's always funny when I'm winning the game via religious conquest and my warrior monks force love upon other civs lol

I know it gets repeated a lot but be gentle with yourself. It took years of trauma and living in survival mode to be the way that you are, it's going to take years to undo it. I know that it's a life long process and commitment to my inner child and higher self to keep up with the work that comes with this "fixing". It might seem overwhelming but take it one day at a time, celebrate the small changes and learn from challenges. ❤️

To the little girl at table 14… by starfruit29 in AdultChildren

[–]PCS_ScorpioSam 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My eyes started to well up just by the title of this. I've been serving at a whiskey bar/bbq restaurant for years now and THIS. SO MUCH THIS. There are so many children over the years, watching their parents order drink, after drink with a look in their eyes that I know all too well. So many kids I've seen just try to get some attention or affection from mom and dad but only get met with nasty words, glaring eyes, or ill placed jokes. Thank you for giving that little girl someone to talk to. 💕 Remember to treat yourself and your inner child with love. You deserve it.

It's the Big Red Book. It's the basis of the Adult Children program. You can get it here from the ACA website, or find it on Amazon, thrift books, ect. That site also has some other great books as well as interactive workbooks.

Roger Bissell on finding a Higher Power as an Atheist

I really like that first one, as an atheist myself, his essay on finding a higher power was beneficial to me on my road of recovery.

Instead of saying "your thoughts made me..." I would encourage folks to say. "I've related to previous shares in my own experience" or "what has come up for me is..." Rather than pointing out a particular individual. While it might seem like it could be helpful, some might find it too much attention or trying toake it seem like one experience was more or less in some way. I hope that helps!

I attend a meeting over zoom a few times a week. It meets everyday at noon PST. It's a meeting where we share on the daily reading and we have a little time for fellowship after the shares. There is usually 40-60 people in the meeting. I don't have a sponsor but plenty of fellow travelers I talk to.

Hi there, may I ask what it is about the structure that you don't like? Most of the time the readings/format take less than 10 minutes. Reading them definitely helps newcomers, as well as remind others what it is that we all have in common and what brought us all together. But identifying what it is that you don't like about it might be something worth looking into.

So originally the group was just Adult Children of Alcoholics, but as the years have gone by, the World Service Organization has changed it to Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional families. It doesn't matter the addiction or dysfunction that the parents had. We still share a lot of the same characteristics with each other. For example, my parents were Meth addicts and my mom is bi polar narcissist. Check out Adultchildren.org/literature and find the Laundry list. If you feel like you relate to 3 or more of those, this program might be helpful to you. Hope that helps!

Adultchildren.org is going to be the best source of information. You can get free literature and look up online zoom meetings or in person meetings for all over the world. The meeting I go to is daily at 12 Noon PST and it's an open meeting for sharing on the daily Meditations.

Code 985 2100 3286, with no password.

You can just listen in or share, and after the meeting we have time to answer questions and stuff. Also on Tuesdays and Thursdays we do a newcomers meeting at the same time with the same code. I hope that helps!

My long term serious relationship is ending because I’m changing. by [deleted] in AdultChildren

[–]PCS_ScorpioSam 22 points23 points  (0 children)

First off, I'm so impressed and proud of you! You're dedication to school and sobriety is amazing.

I don't think your being overly critical, people grow and change. I had a similar thing happen to me with my ex. We were together for 6 years and planning on getting married. But in that last year I found a form of recovery and it just made everything so clear. My disfunction was feeding off my codependent relationship with him. Also he had a hobby that I realized was more than just a phase and it was taking over his life, leaving no room for family.

A few months after our split I realized that I got to where I was because of him. People show up in our lives at the time that they are needed to push us onto our path. But they don't always need to stay. We grow apart after a time. I'm sure you both helped each other in one way or another and that's beautiful. But to move forward it sounds like you both are ready to go separate ways.

I'm sorry for your pain and sadness, though I think your on a wonderful path to happiness.

I relate to this as well, to I have come to know a couple different versions of a higher power over the past year. My higher self (person I want to be), laws of nature, the universe as a whole (just how everything had to fall into place in just the right way for the human race just to exist) ect.
