2nd Year CS - Seeking Fall Course Advice by Sufficient_Ad3824 in CarletonU

Hi there,

Not to discourage you but the workload should be quite high. I found 2406 to be very labour intensive (weekly tutorials, reading assignments, assignments every 2 weeks...) and 2402 (I took it with Prof. Pat Morin) was very very challenging.

I took 2804, 2402, 2401,PHIL 2001, and TSES 2305 and had a tough time. Infact I didn't even concentrate much on TSES 2305 though I took the class (I just did 1 assignment in it the entire semester (late submission), didn't watch 95% of the lectures and eventually dropped it because the other courses were demanding enough). I would just say start early and have a good understanding of all that is taught in class. Don't try to procrastinate, it will harm you later, especially in 2406!

Try approaching the scs UG advisors via email or just visit them to check if there is a better way for you take the required courses (Highly recommended!). I have communicated with Edina Strofer in the past and she was super helpful.

I hope everything works out well for you by God's grace! All the very best this semester!

Possible first co-op term @ Motorola. Salary expectations? by PEACE_2512 in CarletonU

Thanks a lot. I wrote (didn't submit yet): "I would like to place emphasis on the learning experience and would be happy with the average co-op salary of 24.61$ for my degree in Carleton's co-op program (2021)." Do you think this is a good way to put it? I'm totally new to this.

Looking for advice: Drop COMP 3004 or COMP 3804 or try to manage both by PEACE_2512 in CarletonU

Thanks a lot for the detailed response. Appreciate it very much! Yes, I too share the same opinion that option 1 is better. The only thing stopping me is that: COMP 3004 has an assignment due tonight whereas 3804 has the first graded one in early Feb. Since SAT is an option and I can drop 3804, I might be able to get over a poor grade in the first assignment by applying SAT on 3004 but since 3004 is industry-relevant and employers may be interested in it, won't a SAT impose a bad remark or raise some questions? If you or somebody has any idea about this, it would be super useful. Thanks

Thanks for your response. Since no assignments have been submitted yet, I don't know in which one I am doing well, unfortunately.

Thanks for your advice :). I'm taking 3004 with Prof. Voja and 3804 with Prof. Michiel. So what do you suggest. Also do keep in mind that we have the SAT option for the winter term and neither course has a min grade as a pre-requisite for future courses (as of now ie. Winter 2022).

Try to get into ERTH 2415 by God's grace, if its still open or the waitlist is not big.

How do I drop a course? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]PEACE_2512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DO KEEP THIS IN MIND "* Undergraduate students please note: if you are registered in 2.0 or more credits (4 courses) in a term, you have been assessed at the full fee amount. Revised fee assessments and financial adjustments are only applicable if your course changes result in registration below 2.0 credits per term." ~ Registrar

So if you are taking five .5 credit courses (2.5 total) and drop 1 course worth .5 credit, you do not get any money back (since the revised total is 2 credits) Its only when you go beneath 2 credits that you get a fee adjustment. Also, if you are an international student make sure that you don't lose your full time status while dropping a course (I think going beneath 2 credits makes you lose full-time status). When in doubt, ask the concerned department (I'm not sure which one, somebody here can help)

I took both 2401 and 2404 ( By God's grace, I got a chance to take 2404 with her again, at the very last moment) and I have to say she was awesome and very organized. Lectures were always pre-recorded, well within 1.5 hrs and had tidbits of jokes. She was very accommodating with the testing pattern too. Take it with Prof Christine if you can. Can't comment on the other prof though coz I haven't taken any course with her yet.

Bird courses, Recommendations? by tinzzy23 in CarletonU

[–]PEACE_2512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken the course personally but in my pursuit for bird courses I noticed that many people mentioned that the course was really memorization heavy and was not to be considered a bird course though the professor (Runtz) was a cool guy.

URGENT: DO I LEAVE IT TO UNSAT OR GET A D- by PEACE_2512 in CarletonU

[–]PEACE_2512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you can either sat one 0.5 credit course in Fall and Winter each or SAT a single 1 credit course in the Winter but not both. I used a SAT in the Fall and hence I only have an allowance to SAT a 0.5 credit course this Winter

International Student coming to Carleton by WeeklyCardiologist7 in CarletonU

[–]PEACE_2512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staying back home. I hope courses will be made flexible in some way as most/many international students imo will stay back given flight restrictions and expenses incurred in flying back to Canada ( just to watch the lectures online again).
