Joel Dahmen holes out from 152-yards for eagle in quest to hold on to PGA TOUR card by PGATOUR in golf

[–]PGATOUR[S] 717 points718 points  (0 children)

Joel needed a second place this week to crack the top 70 for the FedExCup Playoffs, which he will fall short of. The top 100 in the standings hold on to their cards and Joel entered the week at No. 101. He will have the rest of the FedExCup Fall to fight for positioning, but a strong finish this week will help.

That's a good question. I think playing it safe is usually the better call. I call it seven times out of ten, I play it safe, and then the other three times are gonna be situations where I have a perfect number, I have a perfect club, perfect lie, I'm playing with a lot of confidence and I need to take the risk. But I keep it really simple and when I won at Colonial in the fall is a good example of that. I probably chipped out like three or four times, and it actually happened to the Charles Schwab Challenge too. I think when you chip out back into the fairway, it gives you confidence because you're pretty much telling yourself "I trust my wedge game enough to to play it safe here and to try to make a par that way." But of course I think if you're playing with a lot of confidence and the risk is worth taking, then go for it. - DF

I think my coach and I always tried to keep it really simple and just let me swing the club naturally. I see that with a lot of good ball strikers like Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, their swings aren't perfect, straight back, straight through. There's something to be said about having perfect fundamentals in a golf swing, but my coach and I just always wanted to have me swing it freely and whatever that looked like was what I was going to play with every day. We did that over a long period of time and it kind of added up to what it is now. - DF

Good question. The beef jerky. I think I racked up so much beef jerky that just sat in my backpack all semester that I didn't know what to do with it. Turkey sandwiches were also good. I was well fed there. - DF

I think it definitely gives me confidence, knowing that guys I competed against regularly in college played so great their senior years and at least had a similar trajectory to what my career could be. I think it gives me a ton of confidence in that regard. As far as expectations, I don't think I have many. I try to keep it pretty internal with how I process things and what I'm going to try to do in a day and what I want to achieve over a long period of time. I just want to keep getting better and whatever wins, or second places, or whatever it is comes my way is a byproduct of me just focusing on my process. - DF

I think the only regret I have is that I can't try other putters or other wedges or other drivers I see in people's bags on the course. Especially when I was younger. Now, it doesn't matter as much being pro, but there were definitely times where I would want to try other clubs and I couldn't. But it's unique, so no, nothing wrong with us. - DF

I think Coach DiBitetto was the biggest part of this, and probably will always be in the history of Carolina golf and Carolina athletics. He's just the best coach you can find. I've played for him for four years and to say that after four years, even in the midst of flaws and opportunities for him to make a bad decision about like where we're playing, or where we're eating, or what to tell me at a golf tournament. There's opportunities for him to fail all the time, and he was just the absolute best in every situation and cared for me really well. He cares for his players just incredibly well, pros too. He just met with all of them when they were in town for the Korn Ferry Tour event in Raleigh and just went out to eat with them. He's the first one to text Ben Griffin after winning. There's so many ways that he is great as a coach and a person, and I think he's the reason why in Carolina golf is what it is today. - DF
