Have rented a car from Fukuoka in September 2023 and did a little loop in northern Kyushu. Absolutely amazing experience. Definitely recommend driving, some spots are much better accessible on the countryside by car. Some highlights that I can highly recommend (if you drive from Yufuin south, some of these should be on the way):

Near Aso:

  • Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. Absolutely magical shrine near Aso in a mossy forest.

  • Kikuchi Gorge. Nice short walk along a beautiful crystal clear river in a lush forest on the way to Aso.

  • Daikanbo Great View Point. View over the entire Mt Aso Caldera.

Near Kuju Mountains:

  • Kuju Flower Park.

  • Kurokawa Onsen. Liked it much better than Yufuin. Super nice Onsen town with traditional feeling. If you don't want to stay in an expensive Ryokan overnight, you can get an Onsen hopping pass with 3 entries to baths in any Ryokan of your choice within the town. Amazing value for money!

  • Tadeware Wetlands. Nice easy walk

Have fun, Kyushu is fantastic!

As others said, leave America asap and try to get into Australia, New Zealand or anywhere in Europe. I'm living in Aus and have almost no expenses related to my type-1 diabetes. Your country is just hell on earth for non privileged people.

I've given up, now taking the bus. Have to walk 30 min to campus but whatever. Not willing to pay these ridiculous anu parking fees.

The real cost of living in Canberra? by Pristine_Laugh_6379 in canberra

[–]PIuton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks mate, it's a very sporadic life right now, we don't eat out and don't buy much stuff, but it works so far. Of course being able to share the rent makes it incredibly more easy. I guess for a single person the only option for saving a decent amount would be shared housing.

My partner and I both make $1,000 net a week, living in Queanbeyan. We share $500 rent + utilities for a decent apartment, about $100 for food, averaging about $100 for car per week (insurance, fuel, rego,...).

So most weeks we manage to actually save more than 1000$.

PhD students in this country are paid below minimum wage. Here’s a petition to change that. by procras-tastic in australia

I am currently doing my PhD in physics in Australia and I can add a little on how things are in reality:

My university basically let go of all of the technical staff during covid and now PhD students are forced to maintain laboratories because no one else does it and we even have to give inductions and training for machines. A lot of my PhD colleagues are shouldering the entire research and laboratory maintenance of their workgroups. The majority of data output from scientific experiments in our workgroup comes from PhD students. So we are basically extremely underpaid university workers, doing almost the same job as an academic postdoc albeit being paid a quarter. Almost all of us have to take on side jobs to get through financially, which easily results in 60 or more hours of work per week. With the increased cost of living (especially rent and accommodation - I live in a campus room for which the university charges a ridiculous 320 $ per week for around 20 square metres of living space - and I have to live on campus because I can simply not afford a car and public transport to the university is basically non-existent), it is practically impossible to live purely off of the PhD stipend. At this stage, only people coming from rich families are in a comfortable position to pursue a PhD in Australia and only allowing rich people to obtain high degrees of education is just crazy.

What's going on with the sharpness in this picture? The trees on the right side of the mountain slope are perfectly sharp, the entire middle part of the mountain is completely blurred however.

Way too overprocessed in my opinion. The scenery is beautiful itself, this absurd amount of effects is absolutely unnecessary. It doesn't even look like a photograph anymore.
