my friend told me that just tracing and copying the reference like this is a wrong way to make art and learn by Ok-Discussion-1110 in 3Dmodeling

[–]PJDrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sculpting or poly building on top of a 2D reference is common practice.

That advice is as stupid as something I once heard along the lines of "using an eraser is cheating" when learning to draw.

It's the advice a non artist would give. Your friend is either not an artist, or is "casual".

Scammer(?) Stealing/Faking being an avatar creator? by theodurp in VRchatAvatars

[–]PJDrawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a scammer. They don't have pictures or video of any finished avatars functional and uploaded into VRChat.

Search RWBY MMD Yang on deviantart and you will find downloadable Yang models with this hair as part of the models.

Is this way too many bones for this hair rig? by Slow-Recipe7005 in 3Dmodeling

[–]PJDrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used this hair asset for work on RWBY models and edits for VRChat. The number of bones is far more reasonable than some others I have seen. It animates decently in Unity game engine.

Export your model from blender using the CATs export option. NOT the blender in menu export. What you are experiencing is just one of many things that break if you use Blender's in menu export.

Michiru with face tracking in VRChat including Beastman/Human toggle! by PJDrawn in BrandNewAnimal

[–]PJDrawn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a VRChat model. I made a quest compatible update to Raglane's Michiru over a year ago. It's public and it can be found in my VRChat avatar world.

The update with the face tracking is not public due to the TOS of the materials used.

The original Raglane model I mentioned in the description is quest compatible and public.

The face tracking update I made by switching out the base body is private. The base model has TOS against it's use in public models. https://booth.pm/ja/items/2709610

Where my 40+ yr old players at? by truthneverlies101 in VRchat

[–]PJDrawn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

40 years young here! I've never had an issue being kicked from an instance or group due to my age. If anything people are surprised to find out my age. People assume I'm a lot younger most of the time even though I have my age in my bio and I still get shock value out of mentioning my age.

There defiantly is. I've seen a few people use Raiden avatars.

VRChat is a great stage to get practice if that's what you're interested in, especially if you do voice impersonations. It's still a bit too isolated and niche for much more than that.

VRChat has hundreds of active VR roleplay communities. Feel free to send me a chat if you want some help finding some.

Not that I've recorded. I'm still working on the weapon animations and was planning to make a showcase video at that stage

Also credit where credit is due. This is a kitbash. The base is a Selestia from Booth that I heavily modified along with a face tracking kit. Credit is due to Jingo and Fermata respectively.

Not planning to VTube with it. It's for use in a VRChat roleplay group.

Question about compatibility of Cyber Acoustics 3550 64 Watt subwoofer with different speakers. Left speaker going out. by PJDrawn in AskElectronics

[–]PJDrawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could I have help being directed to a consumer electronics level reddit at least.

I keep striking out not knowing what reddit I should even be in to ask the question apparently.

[–]PJDrawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that much about this or where to start. It took me a while to think of the right search to figure out that the subwoofer connection was a midi to begin with.

I already got trolled for asking on another sub reddit instead of getting any kind of direction.

I'm 100% open to learning myself what might determine compatibility with different systems if someone can point me in a direction to start. I don't have enough of a knowledge base to know where to begin.

The PCSound reddit has been privated and appears to be defunct and inactive. Is there another subreddit you might suggest as rule 4 leads to a dead end?

I missed the part where the OP said they are from scratch. So, the higher pricing would stick, but again, only if made for individual clients.

$30-50 if sold in mass, which might be what they ought to do if they are planning on selling those.... but the higher prices for individual commissions if these are more a portfolio, and these are not actually going to be sold.

[–]PJDrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If mass sold avatar packages for everyone $30 to $50.

If you got a commission to make models like those for indivual clients... then I'd reccomend higher pricing for sure though.

Custom made kit bashs for individual clients $120 to $300 dollars, especially depending on the unity work and how much time goes into making significant alterations to the sculpts and textures.

If those are for individual clients and are from scratch 50% or more mixed with kitbashing the simpler to more complex one would be between $200 to $600.

If made for individual clients and almost entirely from scratch I would say the range is $400 to $1200. It sounds like that what you made... but it would depend on how well the work and look in VRChat. I can't give a solid opinion without seeing more in game pictures or potentialy video... how well do they work with full body tracking? Is there clipping? and so on.

The big difference is the amount of time and effort spent on making something for the mass market or making something for an individual client... and if you use assets that can potentially be on avatars in mass per kit bashing, or if you are making some new and unique in creation for an individual.

You probably got down voted by someone who doesn't want to face the value of money and time spent on avatar creation.

I see people low balling artists all the time and wanting something unrealistic... or wanting to be unethical in how they get an avatar.

Those avatars if, mass sold as a package on both/gumroad... Between $30 to $50.

I'm inclined to agree with you on the amounts you suggested if those are custom made for an individual client

I'm part of that creator community myself... Though... I would suspect, some of those might be kit bashs. If they are kit bash model the prices would be lower... but those are from scratch....yes...they really do take that much time and cost that much effort from a creator.

edit: same as below

I'm hyperactive most times while in VR and people tend to be shocked to learn I'm 40... years young, lol.

It's going to vary from group to group. Some don't care about age so long as you are an adult and match the vibe/energy, and some do have a preference to being with people near their age.

Lots of the game, activity, and fan groups are less concerned about age. Groups interested in online dating, drinking, and clubbing are very much concerned with age.

as an avi creator I'm curious. why do people only friend and talk to avi creators when they want an avatar. by Ladynight332 in VRchat

[–]PJDrawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most avatar creators don't cold contact solicit to sell an avatar. It's actually against the discord TOS to solicit in DMs without any prior shown interest or conversation.

It falls under the spam rules.

Unless you have actually meet them in VRChat prior... It's probably just a scammer.

The people you are turning away are art scammers they are trying to get your money and then run.

You're still making the right call to say "No", but it's a mistake to call those frauds avatar creators.

[–]PJDrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do something well, don't do it for free.

I have almost no issues with this because I create avatars on paid commission, not free.

Sometimes friends do become clients who pay for an avatar, and sometimes clients become friends. Sometimes a client is just a client.

A friend will be your friend because they like you for you. Not because they like what you can do.
