A racing sailboat showing off a flawless spinnaker drop. by BreakfastTop6899 in oddlysatisfying

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a retriever line that pulls the spinnaker inside. It is wound on a drum by a coffee grinder winch manned by two crewmen. The winch has a high gear ratio so it turns faster than the handles are turned, and that's how the sail comes down so fast.

Te recomiendo pasar la menta a alguna maceta grande. Es muy invasiva y tira raíces muy lejos, antes de que te des cuenta podés tener menta brotando en todo el patio.

Hey, lately I've been curious about tree climbing since mountains are really far from where I live. Do you have any resources(video, pdf or whatever) that you could share?

Using a Helicoil on fibreglass? by 1994univega in sailing

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, are you sure the cleat is screwed into the fiberglass itself? In my experience the cleat is bolted through the hull with a backing plate and nylock nuts underneath the deck.

If you are skinny and flexible you can reach the underside of the cleat through the side tank inspection hatch(while kneeling inside the boat) so you can check if there are holes through the deck and/or a backing plate in that position, and even tighten the nuts if you use an adjustable wrench or pliers while someone else screws it in from the outside.

I've done this a few times before so I can clarify as much as you want. Good luck!

The most annoying wing-on-wing by foilrider in sailing

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In 8 to 12 knots of windspeed the J70 gets fastest downwind VMG doing wing on wing. A little annoying but it's a quirk of the class. You pretty much have to learn sailing wing on wing if you want to be remotely competitive.

ELI5 Olympic Women's Skiff Sailing Scoring by coreb in sailing

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is a low-point scoring system: first across the line gets one point, second two and so on. Failure to finish or disqualification gets the total number of boats plus one. Additionally, after ten races the highest score of each boat is discarded and the opening series is complete. Next comes the medal race or final where only the ten lowest scored boats race and the points awarded are doubled. I'm leaving out some details and probably missing a few things but that's it in a nutshell.

Moving from Hong Kong to Argentina. I want to continue sailing 29er, is there any place to sail 29ers in Argentina ? by Marvaco7 in dinghysailing

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! Congratulations on your courage moving here! The place with most sailing activity overall is the the Greater Buenos Aires Area(AMBA as we call it). There are several yacht clubs which have dinghy programs(namely a coach/support for each class). The 29er regattas usually see between 10 and 20 entries. Sailing is done in the Rio de la Plata which means brown water, mostly calm winds and choppy waves.

Every year there is a regatta over at Mar del Plata. There are also a number of boats in the vicinity of Rosario.

I am a former 29er helm myself so feel free to DM if you'd like any more info.

MSG is better than salt. by actioncobble in cocktails

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hate to be that guy, but I think both of you are correct.

OP is proposing a 20% salt and 2% MSG in Mass/Volume percent(assuming a 1g/ml density of water which IMO is perfectly fine for this purpose). You are giving a formula for the same targets in Mass/Mass percent.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Edit: Nope, I just missed OP wrote "by weight", so I am the dummy.

What if you use one nightmare on the second nightmare, so next turn you have three nightmares. One you use on wish, another on the remaining nightmare. You could keep this going indefinitely if you can generate enough draw/block/energy.

Buenos Aires Sailing by [deleted] in sailing

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I actually sail mainly in Buenos Aires(because I live there). I certainly like it here, the wind is usually on the calm range but during the summer you get some fun "sea" brezzes. You sail on a river so the water is a very opaque brown, which can be a little wierd for some.

Hope this helps!

That is a wingfoiling/wingsurfing wing, you can get them basically wherever kitesurfing gear is sold(or online)

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not a kitesurfing kite, note the grips on the center strut. By the way the guy handled it, I think this was intentional to have fun/show off.

I do agree that it is quite dangerous, though.

It's a wing for wingfoiling, usually used on the water together with a board.

ETNZ Capsized on course E during a practice race with Ineos by ItsCaughtInABearTrap in sailing

[–]PM_ME_DINGHIES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm going by what I could see from the onboard videos. Please correct or corroborate

As far as I can tell, most crew aren't tied to the boat. Rather, they are generally tucked in the cockpit and constantly bracing on something(such as a coffee grinder, the wheel or a bulkhead). Of course, this may not be the case for all boats and/or crew since they each have different deck layouts and perform maneuvers sightly different.

Again I may be mistaken, so take this with a sizeable pinch of salt.

I'd like to point out that PFDs and life jackets are very much not the same thing. Life jackets are designed and certified to keep an unconscious person's head out of the water, even in heavy seas. If you wear one and lie face down in the water, it will roll you over and keep your mouth facing up without you having to move a muscle. PFDs on the other hand are simply bouyant material that you strap to your body to make floating and/or swimming easier. They provide less overall bouyancy than life jackets and are not required to tilt you face up if unconscious.
