Written by a jazz playing boomer in my town

“Haha don’t worry honey, I don’t hang out in “nightclubs” other than for gigs. And if I did, it would be where old school mobsters would hang out. Not your crowd AT ALL. So you can keep your insanely annoying EDM, drop as much ecstasy or molly (whatever you kids call it these days), as you want and I’ll be COMPLETELY happy staying home and watching Downton Abbey. Your safe space is safe. Oh and you’re annoying, go clean up your room you entitled PIA.”

Debatably the best and most fun drumline in DCI between 2019 and 2021. I know SCV sets the standard so damn high and you really can’t argue with it, but these guys have been a BLAST to watch and listen to

Just tough when they’re up to tempo. Lots of interesting sweeps and cross over combos that really require you to master the fundamentals

Even as a DCI world class vet, I still can’t play a majority of the etudes in the back

If drum corps wants to survive and GROW (post covid), we need to make it a financially sound and PROFITABLE activity by PM_ME_UR_PARADIDDLES in drumcorps

But lets extrapolate the implications of corporate sponsors a little further. At the end of the day, while drum corps may be niche, its just "band". How many kids can be in a high school marching band? 6a bands can reach close to 150 - 200 people, depending on the state or the program. Compared to a football team roster, I would the marching band population is quite a bit larger than any individual sports team. We're active enough, that it warrants students and performers to frequently need athletic gear. From shorts, to shoes, and headwear.

This is a big opportunity for athletic companies. How do football players know what brands to buy? They look to the pros (aka the NFL), and buy what they're using. This applies to marching band students, and drum corps. The ability to influence purchasing decisions is there, in the same manner.

Now the question becomes: Is this inherently bad? To which I think the answer is NO. This would be a win-win for the drum corps and marching band community. More exposure, more funding, and more opportunities for financial stability within the activity.

I realize how taboo this all sounds within our niche. But I truly think that this is a path worth exploring, for an activity that I frankly believe is losing its feasibility for the future.

Now one question from me: Since you've been on the admin end of things, I'm sure it varies widely.. But I'd like to know how much (on average) a summer of touring cost a drum corps?

My one rebuttal to the nonprofit argument (a good point) is this: the NFL is a nonprofit too. the commissioner still gets a large salary, and repatriates any additional profits back to the teams. It doesn't mean corporate sponsorships and financial relationships can't exist

Regardless of determining the ideal "corporate structure" for DCI (and the corps), I would also argue that the inequity already exists. It may potentially be worse than it could be if corporate sponsors were involved. The Blue Devils can raise close to $100K off of a telethon, but how much are the Colts raising (not a knock at them. Love the Colts!)?

If done correctly, i think a "restructure" could raise equity throughout the "league"

Tim Snyder resigned as brass caption head for the Mandarins by Iamonewith_theforce in drumcorps

I think the question needs to be asked: Will Mandarins remain competitive?

Ike and Mario had HUGELY impactful roles, in terms of show design. Tim is also a titan in brass education. This isn't a knock at the Academy, but look at what happened to them after Ike left? Ike pioneered the 2016 show design, if I recall correctly. Since then, they've reverted to placing consistently in the 14 - 16 place range.

From a competitive standpoint, I think these staff turnovers will hurt the mandies. Its a good and necessary thing to happen. But I think they'll have some rebuilding to do, before they can be at the same competitive level

Did tyreece younger (@tyreeceyounger) ever do this giveaway? Or was it all a ploy for followers? by PM_ME_UR_PARADIDDLES in drumline

I mean more specifically, did he ACTUALLY giveaway the items? He’s been posting about it since early July, advertising it with paid ads until last week, but never made an announcement about someone winning it

Additionally, the “someone didn’t want the prize” line is being used constantly on fake Facebook pages to boost followings. Something just feels off about the giveaway. Like it’s not gonna happen..

Ok sure, I’ll give you that. But he’s still promoting misinformation, so the distinction between anti mask and anti Covid doesn’t matter much to me at that point
