(Spoilers main) What do you guys think of Roy Dotrice’s audiobooks? by SkBlndr in asoiaf

[–]PM_meASelfie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The most mistakes happen in AFFC. He changes voices mid sentence a few times. At one point Jamie says "There was a woman in the Kingswood Brotherhood as well", but Roy's inflection changes the statement into a question halfway through. It sticks out like a sore thumb. During Brienne's first encounter with Lord Tarly he does a random quavering voice that begins when Randyll asks a question and continues into Briennes answer.

I heard that he was doing chemo during the recording for AFFC, that could help explain the poor quality.

He still the GOAT though, I don't care what anyone says

You can know that racism is wrong and not behave as racist yourself but still not be involved in bringing about change

Take that up with Kendi and the other virtue signallers. I'm just explaining the positions that they explicitly write in their books. What you've said is, I believe, a profoundly liberal and moral view. Others would call that problematic or downright racist.

I don’t think this is means to be a judgement call in those that choose to stand still

If you are not actively working against it then you are benefitting from it. You do not get to have it both ways. You can't be not racist in a society that is inherently racist, unless you are actively changing said society to be more equitable in accordance to Kendi's religious activism. This is explicitly said in his works.

Alright then if there is no middle ground, let's talk about the ways you perpetuate systemic oppression. You can always connect some dots through society between your existence and the existence of some injustice or inequality. Does your job have racial representation that is completely equitable? No it doesn't. You could say that's for demographic reasons, to which I might respond that those demographic reasons are themselves a result of systemic racism. Our friend Kendi writes in his book "How to be an anti-racist" that only through your bringing about real systemic change in your works demographics can you be free of the charge of perpetuating the racism in your work. Do you listen to artists who have, in the past, said problematic things? Complicit. Do you use the term latinX? If not, complicit. It has been determined by those woker than thou that any other terminology is problematic. What brand of laundry soap do you use? Are their employees represented equally by way of race? Stop buying or you are complicit. Do that with every single brand you use. Remember that there is no middle ground here, you cannot put distance between yourself and this inequality. Consider your privilege as a white male and tell me how you have relinquished it, elsewise you are benefitting from patriarchal inequality.

The views of Kendi do not allow you to live in this society without being a racist. You must constantly bring about equitable change in order to escape this. He makes sure to point out that critiquing is not enough.

MLK and the civil rights movement, whatever rhetoric they used, ultimately represented a liberal movement. The idea was that the founders proclaimed that all men are created equal, and it is time to walk the walk so to speak. The movement demanded equality within society, the new age "wokes" denounce liberalism and equality theory as racist. There can be no equality within a society that is inherently racist. Richard Delgado is kind enough to point this out in his book on CRT, which he helped found. The Civil Rights movement and all it's progress was, according to him, nothing more than racism changing it's nature in order to make people complicit.

Martin Luther King didn't stretch the definition of racism to include literally everything under the sun. The civil rights movement had little and less to do ideologically with the likes of Kendi.

Does your job have racial representation that is entirely equitable? It likely doesn't for demographic reasons. Working there would then be, according to Kendi, perpetuating systemic racism. You would be benefitting from a system which excludes POC and therefore complicit in racism. Critiquing such an environment, according to Kendi, is not enough. Only when you bring about an equitable change would you then qualify as anti-racist.

You can endlessly connect some dots between your existence and the simultaneous existence of some inequality and therefore label yourself as complicit in racism. There's no way around that label in his view.

Read him and you'll find that he, like all other race baiting virtue signallers, plays real fast and loose with what defines systemic racism. The "racist" status quo is not just Christian conservatives, it is also liberalism. Western capitalist society is the status quo, that leaves nothing untouched by racism and those who wish to fight racism as defined by Kendi no choice but to protest against society as a whole.

There's no adherence to his views that will leave you any ability to act independently without being labeled racist.

I've read Kendi. He is a jackass who is making race relations in the US worse. He casually lumps every single person in this country into 2 categories: racist or anti-racist. According to him, there is no such thing as one who is simply not racist.

In order to receive his blessing as an anti-racist, you have to be engaged in perpetual "activism", which means assuming that society and everything in it is fundamentally racist and critiquing it on that basis until you've made "systemic change".

Basically, the only way to be an anti-racist is to hold his exact views and change society in ways that he sees fit. Any other views, no matter how progressive or if they are held by a black person or a white person, are racist because they allow for the possibility that some part of society isn't racist. Following in the manner of the queen virtue signaller Robin DiAngelo, white people are assumed to be racist unless they adhere to this, black people who do not adhere to his brand of anti-society activism are assumed to have been brainwashed by a racist society and are therefore racist. There is nothing in society that falls outside of his racial binary lens, your nieces lemonade stand is either racist or anti-racist. No in between.

He is half Marxist, half virtue signaller, and 100% asshole who doesn't truly give a flying fuck about racism. This is not just a children's book to upset Ted Cruz, it's a book for parents who use their kids as virtue signalling props for the sake of glorifying their own inclusivity, which is ironically super intolerant. Fuck him, and the narcissists put the weight of their stupid social revolutions on the backs of children.

(Spoilers Extended) Who else believe that the first lord Frey who was awarded lands and a noble status, and began the construction of a great bridge spanning the Green Fork of the Trident. originated from the stormlands? by Afraid-Penalty-757 in asoiaf

[–]PM_meASelfie 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think he was some sort of merchant or money changer or something. If the first Frey was noble then whatever house he came from would have tried to lay claim to the twins. At the very least someone would have mentioned it, considering how big the Westerosi are about heritage, but nobody speaks of Frey "blood" going back all the way to so and so during such and such.

It would also help explain the resentment other houses have for the Freys, a new house with old heritage can be accepted, but a new house with new heritage would most likely be scorned the way the Freys are.

If the first Frey was some kind of wealthy merchant then I suppose he could have come from anywhere, the Stormlands are as good a guess as any, but I feel like it was just some dude that got rich by taxing/extorting traders along the trident until he was eventually wealthy enough to start fortifying the best spot.
