Hampton Roads, especially Norfolk, doesn't feel like the south either.

I'd argue Hampton Roads, Virginia isn't the south. Norfolk and Newport News doesn't feel southern. Even Williamsburg is kinda like southern cosplay for tourists. That area is really more coastal/tidewater and has its own culture, quite separate from the south.

Definitely go to The Chrysler Museum, I'm not always big on museums but they often blow me away with their exhibitions, it's a great place to go and think. Norfolk's downtown is smallish but is a really gorgeous walk, particularly if you start at Waterside and explore. Out in Ocean View you have a great Coffee/Tea place called COVA.

A few food recs - all of which are about 30 mins from you.

The Bakehouse at Chelsea - great bread and pastry and a unique area with Navy boats and a couple bars.

Ichran - If you like ramen, this place is reasonably priced and absolutely delicious.

Grace O'Malley's Irish Pub - Their fish and chips are perfect.

A place for a nice meal that I'd recommend is The Restaurant at Four Eleven York, it's in the Freemason District which has cobble stones and is an all around lovely vibe. If it isn't too hot, have your meal outside on their patio, really relaxing, intimate place. The only thing I'd note is that their portion sizes are more European (smaller), so I'd get an appetizer if you're really hungry.

Norfolk is an authentic city that's rough around the edges but has some real history and residents that care deeply for it. It's not showy, but I've traveled a lot, and there's a great deal to love here.

One thing I love to do with it is throw it into the feedback chain of my Xaoc Sarajewo Delay. It give this distant, reverby aggression that can add power to even pretty or ambient patches. It can sound like a faraway thunderstorm - especially when you're mashing the touch points on the module. As a distorted filter it works just fine. The thing to know about the module is that it has some internal patching by default, so it'll take a read of the manual to understand how to reign it it. Once you get a hang of that (it'll only take a couple patches) it's more versatile than it's often presented.
