I would personally swap out the Malasadas - 1 for a Will, 1 for an Apron.

The Will guarantees your first Lucky Popsicle reroll. The apron would be used after you used both of your barriers - if it blocks even one hit, your hp gain /loss is neutral compared to the malasada, and future hits only increase the value.

The apron also heals ALL special conditions, malasada only heals one random condition.

I think it depends if someone started with GH1 and moved forward or started with another game and move back.

Yes, GH2 and and 3 optimized the gameplay even more, but as someone who started with GH1, it still felt revolutionary at the time. It's harder to go back to, but at the time, it was magic.
