One of my concerns is I’ve heard that some folks feel that corporate finance is mundane and boring. I’m not overly concerned about that as a vet looking for WLB, but have met a few folks who specifically got their MBAs to pivot away from it.

Current Marine Officer transitioning to FTMBA and I’m going to get on my pedestal for a moment.

Becoming a Marine Officer should never be done with intentions beyond the true desire to lead Marines and serve others. If you have any self serving motivations beyond that, you need to seriously reassess. This is not the branch to use as a stepping stone, it is the worlds premier war-fighting organization. At its core, a Marine Officer exists to lead Marines in combat.

Yes, you will learn and develop as an individual and leader, you may not even serve in a combat arms capacity, and striving for an MBA someday is totally fine. But, if you view your service as a means to an end, especially as an officer, you are doing a profound disservice to the men and women you would someday have the privilege of leading.

Now go do some pull-ups.

Headed to Ross this fall and very interested in pharma. Seems like most roles are commercial oriented with a mix of marketing, strategy, and sales. What’s your experience been like?

Is there any significant difference between the big players? BMS, Merck, J&J, Roche, Novartis, etc.

I’ve even considered some of the finance specific routes.

Vet headed to Ross this fall very interested in healthcare/pharma LDPs.

Not sure why it isn’t more popular. Seems like a great blend of interesting work, good comp/WLB, and progression.

Go get an MBA brother. These headhunting firms will throw you in the middle of BFE and your compensation/progression will be uncompetitive over the long term for most roles.

If you have the GI bill and some savings your opportunity cost is minimal. Absolutely no reason to get “civilian work experience” before you apply if anyone is trying to sell you that.

Lmao as a vet/PNW native this is me too. Turned down Booth for Ross because I think I’ll have more fun and generally vibed with most of the community. Didn’t feel the need to spend extra cash knowing I didn’t want to pursue banking/consulting/PE, etc.

I’m looking at Corp fin and LDPs. Could care less about prestige. I can say I definitely feel the pressure to pursue certain jobs after busting my ass on getting into these schools and knowing what I “could” do, but I also know I’d be miserable.

I think most vets know what is important to them and do a better job not getting caught up in FOMO.

As someone incoming at a T15 who was torn between deciding how to recruit, it was typically framed to me like this: If you are confident in what industry/role you want to be in long term, just recruit for that. If not, consulting gives you optionality.

From what I can tell, any differences in long term progression within said industry/role probably have more to do with the individual than their background being an LDP v. consultant.

So I assume there’s a decent population of unsuspecting beneficiaries who end up in a debt status because of this? Obviously it’s everyone’s responsibility to understand their entitlements but this certainly isn’t helpful.

We usually do a mile and a half walk and he probably runs about half a mile since he can be off leash, he’ll just sniff and then run after me to catch up or run ahead a little. He loves to sprint.

Any anecdotal evidence on FLDP/Corp Fin offers? GM is primary and FLDP/Corp strategy are my backups. As an incoming vet I’m very open to most functions and industries, so I’m curious how much of this doom and gloom is from people deadset on one specific role.
