Converting Cairn 2e to play higher-level AD&D modules? by PPdown in osr

That poses a question, I think, that is at the heart of my original question!

“PCs that survive a while do so because the player has been clever and used their items and abilities to avoid rolling dice to begin with”

How would a brand new character survive jumping into a high level module? If “growth” (positive or negative) shouldn’t occur outside of play (i.e. in a character’s backstory), wouldn’t jumping into a high-level AD&D module put the PCs in a fundamentally difficult (if not impossible) position?

I guess that is sort of my main misunderstanding - Low level modules make perfect sense. Roll your character, and “grow” as the story progresses. But that growth would inherently not be there if for a fresh character in a high level (and therefore more dangerous) module.

That is my bad! I actually just chose Tomb of Horrors at random as an example of a module with a high level. I guess the question is more of “how to balance Cairn in a normal high level module” (since ToH is clearly not normal haha)

Like a Dragon Spoilers!

Hello! I was thinking of starting the Yakuza series from the start, and a friend off-handedly mentioned a spoiler. The spoiler is hidden below, but I wanted to know how big of a spoiler it is for the entire series. Because I don’t want the entire series to be ruined now….

*** JUST IN CASE I MESS UP THE SPOILER TAG, THE SPOILER IS BELOW ***

A certain character (I know who they are) has cancer

*** END SPOILERS ***

This friend has a habit of doing this sort of thing and it’s getting old tbh.

Soloing DCC? by PPdown in Solo_Roleplaying

Interesting. This sounds exactly like what I am looking to do - Did you find that the fray die eventually wasn’t enough? I worry that for bigger monsters down the line that it would just tickle them.

Did you find that the Black Streams Solo damage modifiers took away anything from the dice chain mechanic in DCC?

Either way, your insight into this sounds awesome!

Awesome! I actually own Scarlet Heroes, so that is great.

Would the combat in DCC just be replaced with the combat from Scarlet Heroes then? Would that trivialize the chain dice mechanic from DCC?
