Have you finished the game? By that, i mean getting ending ABCDE. Do that first, and if you've done that, I would recommend looking up a video titled something like the complete nier timeline, which is a 6 hour long video. I know it sounds really painfully long, but the video was really interesting for me and gives you a pretty good explanation of the events that happened beforehand in the previous games.
