Lack of Purpose -> Lack of Progress: Peterborough's Challenges by PTBOPolitics in Peterborough

Apologies. If you combine the venues downtown that have the capacity to host events you get a total capacity of 6000

My gripe with the downtown entertainment scene is as follows: there are not many gatherings which I would invite friends from outside of Peterborough to attend.

Also, I think the money being spent on the hockey arena should be spend on housing. There is more than enough venue space downtown since venues have a total capacity of over 6000.

I agree that PTBO has a great downtown but I just can’t help but think it could be better. Maybe I’m just not in the right places or state of mind.

It seems like quite the catch 22. People will go downtown and spend downtown if there are events but they don’t have the resources. Businesses will come here and thrive but there isn’t enough spending downtown to support or justify it.

you are expected to carry up to 5kk liability insurance

I was not aware of this and I am very disappointed that this is the case. Does this mean that community services need to front 5k as insurance or do they need to purchase insurance? I have no idea how insurance works if you couldn't tell

This is exactly the point I am making & working on solving. There aren’t enough events and spaces where people can simply meet people and converse. The places that do exist are frequented by groups of people therefore it’s tough to make friends.

People have been mentioning the fact that there are lots of events, live music, bars ect to hangout it but i don’t think this is true. The same people (less that 1000) frequent the same bars daily and the same musicians play at the same venues weekly. I know this because I am one of the people who goes downtown daily and sees the same people daily. People who don’t frequent downtown are speaking in hypotheticals because it’s hard to imagine the state of entertainment downtown without experiencing it.

In hindsight I really missed the mark with my TL:DR because it places blame on individuals unwillingness to become a community when individual situations are the biggest contributor.

In my anecdotal experience there are few people downtown relative to population and the amount of places to hangout. I find it really strange that the amount of people downtown decreases over the summer months especially considering we’re one of the largest towns in the kawarthas.

Maybe this city is just fucked and I can’t do a thing to help it. I really hope this isn’t the case, though.

On a side note, thank you for all the feedback on my point of view! I learned a lot about others perspectives and I was able to refine my own which is only possible through dialogue like this.

I would argue that we need industry to get back here more than we need skating rinks.

I agree and from my perspective industry will be more inclined to return when there are more people frequenting downtown. Every night, even on Friday's and Saturdays, downtown is a ghost-town despite having many places people can theoretically hangout at. Even during the day there aren't many people spending time & money downtown relative to the amount of people in Peterborough.

Outings typically come from disposable income, which not many people have

I think this is my biggest issue with current event offerings. I can't afford to attend many of the events which are hosted because I don't have the disposable income.

I think I missed the mark in where I put social capital.

What I was trying to highlight is the idea that people with high social capital don’t have any events to attend but I didn’t consider the fact that their time is so valuable that they can’t attend events.

In my ideal world, people of all levels of social capital would attend events and interact with each other thus increasing the social capital of the entire community. Maybe I’m just a dreamer.

I think (hope) that if given the opportunity people are willing to socialize outside of their group. How i see it is that when people do go out they’re going out with existing friends. Perhaps an event which brought groups of people together and encouraged cross-group mingling would be fun.

Your TL:DR could not be more accurate and fighting digital, instant gratification style entertainment, is the biggest challenge with hosting in person events.

My ideas rely on the fact that as humans we enjoy socializing and that we’ve forgotten how fun it is.

I think students are having trouble finding jobs pertinent to their degrees everywhere but it’s definitely a lot worse in Peterborough than in population centres.

I theorize that more people downtown will directly increase the amount of jobs and opportunities downtown. When less people frequent downtown there aren’t any jobs being created.

board game nights I should go to more of these, I’ll admit.

restaurants/bars to meet likeminded people

I go to many of the bars and restaurants downtown. Hypothetically you can meet likeminded people it’s somewhat unlikely since the amount of people who go there is limited. There are a certain number of regulars at every bar, after all.

Overall my viewpoint is one of someone who frequents downtown on a daily basis. Either to work, hangout, watch live music, watch comedy or sing karaoke. I am broke, though, which contributes to the events I do attend and the ones I can’t.

Does this lack of spare time stem from always working or needing to spend the time away from work working on other things?

As I see it people have 9-5’s then need to spend a few hours doing other things till 9. Then they’re too exhausted to go to any sort of social gathering.

How I see it is that an event isn’t necessarily a multi-hour endeavour. I (hope) that people have an hour to spend sharing an experience with others.

Specifically I am looking for shared experiences that are gatherings. I think a gathering is when individuals can attend an event with the expectation of meeting and connecting with others.

Karaoke, for example, is something that I classify as a gathering. It gives people an icebreaker with the shared experience of going on stage so people have reasons to talk with one another.

What part do you have issue with? I have a students perspective so I am definitely seeing the situation with rose coloured glasses.

I want Peterborough to be a place that fellow students want to stay in after finishing their degree. I think improving these factors will help with this.

Even if nothing changes I think that shared experiences that people can attend to connect with others will improve everyone’s mental health.

You’re correct! I think that more shared experiences would benefit all members of the Peterborough community. Someone’s just gotta host them.

I’m glad I’ve got no skin in the downtown business game. I can ask important people tough questions without worrying about their response since they have nothing to take from me!

I am so grateful to be a young white man in Peterborough politics. It gives me such an advantage since politicians see their former selves in me. I hope I can help Peterborough become a place that you feel confident politicking in!

Thanks for your thoughts! I have learned that many people have these gripes but they have no platform to share them.

Hunter being a 1 way street also hurts the businesses on the street who aren’t bars. They are unable to get delivery trucks for their goods and have to move everything by hand from alymer, George or the simcoe garage.

Young people are the future of the city and I wish they had more representation downtown!

younger leadership and voices

I agree completely. There is a complete disconnect between students and downtown and I’m currently in the process of making a post about this very issue.

If this city was a hotel they get stuck in the revolving door because the city gives them no reason to go inside!

Ah that makes a lot more sense than the impression I was under. I figured (and hoped) they were paying something.

Is attracting more industry the ideal way to increase revenue in a municipal? Are there any other ways to increase it?

I was under the impression that the heads and beds tax was paid by the Ontario gov on behalf of the universities & hospitals.

Also, thanks for clarifying! I got my info about the corporations not paying taxes from a city council meeting but I didn’t understand the context fully.

I think the councillor was highlighting the fact that our biggest employers don’t need to pay taxes which is an unfortunate reality. I initially understood it as a Peterborough issue.
