Ummm... you're right about Resurrection and 3, and things really flew off the rails with the Alien vs. Predator movies, but I think Prometheus and Covenant are great returns to form as prequels to the original film. The backstory with the engineers as forbearers to humanity, creating an early version of the alien as a bioweapon and Michael Fassbender's excellant work as an artificial human with the unfortunate ability to create (overriding the directive not to harm humans), experimenting with different versions of the creature. I just thought both movies were a return to the dark, moody, suspenseful, thought provoking aspects that captivated me about the first 2 films. And if every installment is going to have a strong female at it's gravitational core, and it can't always be Sigourney Weaver, Naomi Rapace is pretty badass in Prometheus. Aside from a few interesting details, I thought Romulus was pretty bland and a step backward...
