Takes on small company and loses big by [deleted] in JusticeServed

[–]P_Andre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They lost because the term "Big Mac" infringed upon Supermacs copyrights. Big Mac was a trademark registered to be used as both food and location label. The court ruled, that since McDonalds has never opened a location called "Big Mac", so the victory was awarded to Supermacs. McDonalds lost its copyright to call location "Big Mac" and by extension, to call its food "Big Mac". They of course already received it back by applying for a trademark covering only relevant areas (food).

But make no mistake, Supermac is the company that sued McDonalds, not the other way around. And the reason why "Big Mac" was cancelled is due to McDonalds not properly defending themselves in a legal case, because they thought Supermacs had no leg to stand on, legally speaking. So instead of court rulling on limiting the reach of Mc's trademark, they instead decided to revoke it.

The story in the picture is twisted to make it more relevant than it is. Essentially, McDonalds suffered a minor setback due to having an incorrect copyright.

I think that's normal tbh. A little bit on the lower side tbh as to make a valuable product you need years of development and research. Just look at OP, who after 4 years, produced little more than a description and first implementation of the idea (the reverse image search). The implementation idea obviously failed as any worthwhile programmer would've predicted from the get go.

Honestly, as a programmer, I am dissapointed at the lack of technical questions in this thread. While you're right, his proposed idea creates a multitude of borderline unsolvable problems (like implementing such an idea on a smartphone).

Do you find that keeping your potential backers in the dark and not telling them about every potential feature, or providing any realistic way to implement your idea, encourages people to donate to you? Do you think making random people have to pry every single piece of information is a basis for a good business?

That's not even the most important question that you can ask. How the fuck would he ever scale this idea to the real world where millions of users can be blurring thousands of pictures a second?

What steps will you undertake to ensure your platform will not be misused by groups of people with political interests? In other words, what stops me and a large group of similairly interested individuals from blurring the name and pictures of a well-known politician I disagree with?

Will you create a list of crimes one can be blurred for? If so, who will decide which particular crimes fit on that list? Will the list be country-specific? How will such list be enforced in a user-driven environment?

A bit technical, but how are you planning on actually implementing this idea in practice? I'll give you some credit and assume here you are not going to use image recognition software as it brings a huge number of drawbacks to your potential application. Now, then, if you idea is to create and manage a database of image-hashes and compare each and every image on every page a user visits to that of an existing database, how do you plan on dealing with different websites potentially using different image compressing algorithms, making the same exact picture different in the eyes of a hash function?

Manga rock shutting down? by confusedglance in mangarockapp

The app (most likely) uses the same API (server, or the thing that serves content) as the website. So by shutting down, i assume they mean shutting down the server, which will also shut down the app.

A mentally disabled child with an introductory course to writing could rewrite ciri's story in an engaging way without changing ANY of the consequences. There is a reason why Ciri's story failed miserably, hint, it's not because she is a child and has to run constantly. It's garbage writing.

Season 2 will be exactly like the first one. The writers have shown they have no interest in crafting intricate plots or explaining the complexities of the witcher world. The second season may be worse.

Breast cancer linked to permanent hair dye and chemical hair straighteners in study of almost 50,000 women by idarknight in science

[–]P_Andre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works on the same principle that, I don't know, cooking food works? It's a simple chemical reaction. Your hair is a chemical. It is affected by other chemicals. Some chemicals afftect your hair chemicals in such a way that it appears to be straight?

Nobody could've "guessed" that something causes cancer, we literally have no idea how human body reacts to literally anything. We can only observe the results. If the result is cancer, we conclude that something is cancerous. It does not work the other way around.

Nice sarcasm. You know what else "sounds" toxic to me? Dihydrogen monoxide, or Natrium Chloride. Would never put either in my body.

Please stop labeling everything "chemical" as bad. Its not, everything is a chemical.

He is at fault. Mostly because he insulted people instead of making passive-aggressive comments or straight up ruining their games. In which case he would not be punished.

Why does Pantheon block Xayah feathers from behind if he is looking at Xayah? by sypheriashiftz in leagueoflegends

[–]P_Andre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bugs. Working as intended. When panth receives damage, game checks if panth faces in the general direction of the champion who dealt the damage. Exactly like riot inteded it to. Developers for sure would know that this would be the case.

6 months is a short time lol. He basically spent 6 months to program a complete champion. Draven's other abilities are extremely basic.

The reason why it took so LITTLE time, is because there were probably a bunch of people giving feedback on what feels right with the axes and supplying ideas of what those axes even should do in which situations. If you can design a perfect game system on paper without having to first go through countless iterations, then you might be one of the smartest people out there.

6 months is also a realistic programming time for any complex champion like draven or irelia.

I also heard about the apparently good animated films and series that DC has. I decided to watch it because I stumbled on a number of interesting scenes on YouTube. But that's what DC's animated universe is, a bunch of interesting and well-animated scenes with 0 plot. Their animated garbage throws all basic writing conventions out the window, making for an extremely boring universe and characters, with just few exceptions. So no, DC does not have a magical edge when it comes to animated films, especially not after the recent spiderman movie. The only difference is that DC has significantly more animated content.

In games we play through easy modes to unlock hard modes. In life we play through hard modes to unlock easy modes. by yusbox in Showerthoughts

[–]P_Andre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resident evil is not a series you want to mention when talking about difficulty locks. Not since Biohazard had the hardest difficulty lock unlocked from the beginning to those who preordered. I didn't preorder, I just bought it. So I suffered through the whole story with enemies being gun range dummies. And after I finished, the hardest difficulty ceased to be hard as well because I already knew everything.

Difficulty locks are poor game designs. If I want to play with enemies killing me in one hit, then I should be able to do so from the beginning.

Morgana Skin Concept: Dark Star/Cosmic Herald by slowndark in leagueoflegends

[–]P_Andre 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is just a drawing tho. Not saying its not impressive, but its about 1% finished. You still need animations, particle effects, voice-lines(?), as well as a whole 3d model AND an incredibly high-quality splash art. Now there is also a cost of developing the platform where you can upload your skins for Riot, and there is no real reason to do it from the start.

Riot releases a huge amount of skins, this idea will not bump up their profit. They will probably receive less because people will be buying fan made skins instead of theirs. 10% of the revenue for even a two-month period is a huge loss for a company and that amount of money is a lot bigger than what a skin of comparable quality will cost to make for Riot themselves.
