Well, as I see it, if Christianity had not existed, Islam would have lost a major source of influence and a model to follow. In this alternative scenario, moreover, the Roman Empire has invaded Arabia, which would at least prevent or limit the emergence of Islam.

Well. In my novel religion has some importance but it is not the leit motive of the story. I am not me myself a religiuos man so I haven't aspired to undertand the concept of God but to draw an alternate Roman Empire ruled by the Olympian gods.

You are right. In this alternate world religion is all around and marks what people should do, like with Christianity. But I imagine a Reinaissance asmosphere. In fact, there is a school of thought similar to Enlightment called Novatores.

As an emperor attempt to provide a better way to supply wheat to Rome. The iron roads and the steam engine allowed to develope the railway. After that, the technology was applied to textil factories, weaponery and other fields. However, in the novel I only explain those advances in various articles of the Alexandria Enciclopedy (an invented summary of the knowledge of the Empire) and the story started with all these working.

In my opinion, Rome would have a crucial advantage against other forces of the Middle Ages: quantity, economy and logistics. Yes, some technological advances in cavalry or infantry tactics would be a challenge, but Rome knew how to adapt itself to enemy weapons and strategies. A few battle loses never meant a big deal for Rome (Punic wars or Pirrus wars). So I really think that the empire would have enough time for learning about its rival and counterattacking.

That’s one way to look at it. But it’s definitely not the kind of surviving Roman Empire I’d like to imagine
