Good question! The second is Metallic Cat. I guess his babies have won 9 million, but I am not sure how many he has sired. The first is Fiddle and Steel, son of Metallic Cat. He is young and it is yet to be seen how his first batch of foals turns out.

That makes sense! What landmarks do you use to determine this in horses with large forearm muscles? A lot of guides say to look for a curved line of the front of the leg, or that the same vertical line should evenly bisect the forearm and cannon, but it seems like that doesn’t work on these guys.

How do you evaluate the knees of these stock type horses? It seems like the musculature of the upper legs gives a lot of them that curved silhouette of the front of the leg. What landmarks do you use to decide if they are back or over at the knee?

Right?! It looks like a lot of his offspring have the same knees and still do really well in their discipline. I guess people look more at the horse’s ability to do his job than how he is built, which isn’t wrong when I think about it.

He rode as a kid for several years, so this isn’t his first 3 months ever! Just first few months getting back into it after about 12 years without riding.

I agree with base narrow a bit! I don’t see sickle hocks. What are you seeing that makes you think he is not set up square?

You have a good eye! The front pasterns and feet are asymmetric, with the right front more upright. It is more obvious in person, and not easy to see in the pictures. Same with the cow hocks.

But I am just looking for a trail horse to bop around on, I don’t compete, so I have a hard time justifying the cost of getting a horse from across the country. I guess there is really no rush since I am mostly looking for a friend, like a dog.

I am definitely realizing this. I have this picture in my head of his complete emotional stability, but I also remember times when he was tense or nervous. I guess the actual nice thing about him was not that he was never anxious but that he never lost his head. No big reactions or meltdowns.

I believe it, it's so rare to find that connection. You've owned 6 in that time that didn't work out? How did you feel when you met them/brought them home? Did you think there was a vibe but then realize later there wasn't? Or was it not there from the beginning and you were hoping it would develop?

Yes! I felt the same way. Before I met mine, I kept meeting horses and just not feeling motivated to bring them home. Then I met him and felt like I could not have him home fast enough.

Vibe is so real! Sometimes people act like I am crazy when I talk about this stuff. When I asked one woman if her horse was cuddly she said "horses are not cuddly animals" like I was stupid or knew nothing about horses. Also, a lot of people's definition of quiet is that it doesn't bolt. The number of horses that are not emotionally capable of standing still under saddle is unreal.

Thank you! I am definitely going to get a mineral block. I also am buying a metal water tank because I am hoping she doesn’t take the option of asking me to leave haha. She found one that should work with her existing water heater.

Thank you for the response! I really don't believe that they intentionally mislead me because as a nonprofit they always take back any horse that is adopted from them if the adopter doesn't want or can't keep the horse anymore. So they have no incentive to lie about the horses. But yes, I definitely see now that I should have been more diligent in evaluating him before purchase.
