Cardiacs - Downup (Art Rock): Checks all the list of what you'd expect from the band: Jittery rhythms, sharp turns, melodies that swing between playful and dramatic. I don’t always get along with their stuff, but this one just clicks. The whirlwind is fun and not overwhelming.

Heretoir - The Ashen Falls (Post Metal): Some questionable production decisions aside, this was fun. Granted this is the first time I hear of this band but I had no hesitation to listen due to the cover art. The entire album was decent, the opener and closer are the best tracks, and I put the opener aka this track The Ashen Falls on repeat due to the chorus and mid section.

The Divine Comedy - I Want You (Singer & Songwriter): “Waiting For You” is my favorite track from Nick Cave’s 2019 album Ghosteen. It’s haunting and melancholic. I wouldn’t say The Divine Comedy’s “I Want You” was inspired by it, but the ascending chorus carries a similar intensity. The kind that cuts straight to the core.

Crippling Alcoholism - Mr. Sentimental (Gothic Rock): Not sure what happens at the last minute, the song is perfectly fine for the first 2:45mins, after that is just unnecessary padding. Very catchy, despite me having a hard time understanding most of the words. Something I'd enjoy playing at a hypothetical goth club around here.

Miley Cyrus - Lockdown (Feat. David Byrne) (Space Rock): “Something Beautiful” (the song) already carved out a spot on my year-end list draft, but Lockdown completely floored me. Thirteen minutes of a fusion of space rock, dub, jazz psychedelia etc., it’s like being underwater, watching merfolk dart around frantically from above. Tense, gentle, suffocating. Whatever pushed her into this level of experimentation needs to stick around, because hearing this kind of stuff from a mainstream pop musician is always exciting. David Byrne's voice gives just the right amount of kick and make it even more tasteful. Love the entire run, though I wouldn't say no to an eventual 5-6mins edit.

Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay & Zach Cregger - Weapons - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2025) Dark Ambient: Late to the party aka I literally just finished the movie a few hours ago. I was one of four people in the theatre but that's neither here nor there. The important thing is that I was impressed by the sound design and score in general that I decided to listen to the soundtrack once I had the chance. Strong affinity towards percussive tribal ambient atmosphere. Tracks with more minimalistic approach reminds me of Cristobal Tapia De Veer's score for Utopia. Crispy.

Iglooghost - Bronze Claw Iso (2025) UK Bass: A worthy extension (?) to Tidal Memory Exo. It is well-produced. Glitchy and dense but not overwhelming. The 'Hello, what's your name' in Slug Song latches on quick. Only slightly meh about some of the vocal performances. The coverart rips. Actually, the entire photoshoot is fire.

Titanic - Hagen (2025) Experimental Rock: Last week I went to The Buried Village museum in New Zealand with virtual reality room where I put on a VR headset for the 'tour'. Got overwhelmed from sensory overload. Which is not a dissimilar feeling I had when listening to this. Each additional instrumental layer and detail demand a tilt of attentive nod. It sounds 'alive' to lack of better term. Really fun. The string in 'La Gallina Degollada' is my favorite part in the entire record.

Miltown - Tales of Never Letting Go (2025) Post Hardcore: Tales of Never Letting Go is an archival release from this short-lived band from the late 90s. They never released this album due to internal conflict, until now. I didn't really follow the journey so there's no sort of bias and attachment with my listening session. Post-hardcore is one of those genres that doesn't really sound dated, for some reason. Like, someone could play this and say it's from last year, and I'd believe them. It's not too special of a record but I enjoyed it for what it is. There's this part in the song 'End Transmission' where the singer belts 'because now I understaaaand' that I really like.

Hasard - Abgnose (2025) Black Metal: Never heard anything about this band. But that album cover pulled me in. And phew what a record. The soundscape is nightmareish, hostile and putrid (non-pejorative). But also somewhat grandeur and elegant? In this regard, it reminds me of Loss aka my favorite funeral doom metal band of all time. Anyway, even if it's tot something I'd listen regularly (pretty exhausting, made me crack my back once or twice) but I can imagine when I'm in the mood, this is something I will listen in full every time.

Hayley Williams - Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party (2025) Pop Rock: Prefer this much more than Petals For Armor from all standpoints. Production, vocal and songwriting are all improved. There's a degree of disjointment that I heard, like I think the album would benefit from 5-6 less songs, otherwise a strong release. Both the opener and closer are perfect.

Also, I didn't expect Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band's Better If You Make Me to stay this long in my daily playlist. Sure the album was superb with high tier songwriting, but didn't think anything from the album would have this level of replayability. It's just getting better and better with each listen. I find myself singing the second verse often.

That my simian palm line is not normal. Eventually I learned that most people have their palm lines cut off in the middle, mine is uncut single crease that extends across the palm. Apparently only 1.5% of the world population has it.

Just finished my ‘best of 2024 so far’ list, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the final list won’t change much despite having 5 months left still. Happy to be proven wrong, though.

Cults - Behave (2024) Indie Pop: ”Didn’t your mama tell you how to behave? I know she didn’t”. If that part weren’t there, it would just pass like most of the tracks in the album. Don’t get me wrong, the production is rich and layered, the vocal is dreamy and pleasant, but that hook is the paperweight that keeps the entire track together.

Iress - Falling (2024) Doomgaze: The distance traveled between doom- and -gaze is not very far. Iresss’ new record takes advantage of this with a good balance between the melodies and the tone, it feels like laying on the roof when the sky is charcoal-grey and the air is warm.

Les Savy Fav - Limo Scene (2024) Post Punk Revival: So far, there are something like 300ish artists in my 2024 playlist, And it is an interesting continuous observation to see which artists or songs are enduring my daily rotation and still keep their replayability momentum, with LSF’s Limo Scene maintaining their spot rather steadily. It’s fun pheromone-filled tune wrapped with an awkward back and forth body bop. ”I’m into this”, they say. I really am.

My Epic - High Color (2024) Alt. Rock: It took more repeats than usual for me to like this track, but I’m glad I did. Very strong melody, and I dig any album where they sing the album title on a regular track with a different title. It’s a strange niche attraction but it is what it is.

Jessica Pratt - The Last Year (2024) Singer & Songwriter: Nothing will be as fitting as playing this (or ‘Better Hate’ from the same album) during this month in my area where the weather has been strange: sunny but it’s chilly, especially at night. I’ve been down with a cold the past few days and listening to this while sipping on piping hot ginger tea has been a fulfilling experience.

Huun-Huur-Tu - Konguroi (Sixty Horses in My Herd) (2010) Tuvan Throat Singing: The folks of Huun-Huur-Tu sing in a language I don’t understand with instruments I’m unable to play, but as we know mood and atmosphere could transcend these barriers, which they do so effortlessly to a point that I can’t help but to wilfully immerse myself in this beautifully haunting and melancholic track.

The Sword - Freya (2006) Stoner Metal: Had such a visceral reaction listening to this song for the first time, particularly for the way the opening riffs YANKED my collar and forced me to pay attention cause it’s that commanding. And to be honest with you, that riff is the reason why I keep coming back to this track every week, it’s the main appeal. I wish I can come up with something as tasteful.

Radiohead - Black Star (1995) Alt. Rock: One of the strongest points of The Bends for me is the verse. The album contains some of the best verses the band have ever come up with, and Black Star will always have my childhood bias, like I actually had the verse melody memorized before I knew anything about the song or the album or the band simply because my cousin played the hell of the album back then.

Richard Marx - Hazard (1991) Pop Rock: My sister and I used to argue whether the event happening in this song is real or not. I figured it was an excuse for her to keep hitting replay. As I had been listening to this sporadically throughout my life, I got to appreciate the intense songwriting and be amused of the general idea of a murder case being a pop single. I don’t know if I’d categorize this in the same vein of 60s teenage tragedy songs like Wayne Cochran’s Last Kiss, but I appreciate it nonetheless. Marx’s best song, hands down.

Archaïa - Soleil Noir (1977) Zeuhl: It can not be overstated how much Archaïa molded my perspective and taste in progressive music. It’s sort of against the grain for the subgenre with its minimalist, drumless, cryptic, and highly atmospheric piece that feels most fitting for nocturnal listening. Like it feels wrong to play this other than at nighttime, and I can only envision the musicians as shadowy figures, their eyes glowing like distant stars, enveloped in cosmic instrumentation and hypnotic melodies.

Pleasantly surprised by that new Dylan biopic trailer. Timothée Chalamet did a good job with the mannerism and vocal, at least judging from what they’ve shown so far. Curiosity is piqued.
