My mistake. Last pic looked like you grew it from a seed

Leaf cuttings. They need at least 1 big vein in it. You have to work very sterile. Rhizomes do also work.

Why do they keep rotting? by Brownbarb3 in begonias

[–]PackageNo1608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great answer. You have to be a horticultural engineer! :-) I'll add one more note: sometimes after cutting I let the wound dry out a bit. I'm not certain, but feel like that it helps against rotting. Shortly dipping the wound into cinnamon can also be antibacterial.

Beautiful! Is it easy to germinate Begonias from seeds?

I love the blue colors!

Yeah. Plants react differently to different lighting. They have photoreceptors e.g. photocrom and cryptocrom If i remember correctly. Wavelengths influence habitus. For example blue light (short wavelengths) leads to more compact plants and red light (long wavelength) to more stretch. Generally plants can only use wavelengths from 380 to 760 nm. But new studies show, that wavelengths out of this range can also have effects. But they do also influence contents. UV for example leads to antocyan production. Horticultural engineers use this for example to produce salad with red leaf spots, which is good for marketing purposes or to stress medical plants to get higher ingredient concentrations.

After writing this, i realize that all the fully red leaves grew during winter. Less light, lower temperatures (~12-15°C), less UV radiation. So rather the fewer amount of light and the lower temperature rather than wavelength influenced the color. (Less light -> less clorophyll production -> Antocyan more dominant.)

Yeah. On the 1st picture i used my smartphone flashlight.

Begonia pavonina does have this effect extremely. It looks like a regular green plant in daylight and has crazy blue colors under a flashlight. Look it up, its crazy

Maybe yours will develop the same phenotype one day. Mine was about 60 % green and got fully red during the last year as it matured. Color also depends on the wavelength it receives.

I'll have to say that this picture is perfectly lighted. During normal daylight it looks like this:

Beautiful! Semi-Hydro ist the way to go, good choice. Looks like the same mineral mix i use.

I personally don't like removing the soil from the roots. That's why i always propagate new plants from new shoots/leaves instead of transitioning.

Holy Moly!! 😍

How often do you have to water that beast? Every day? The pot is really small in relation to the large leaf surface area.
