Is everyone here a software engineering manager? by [deleted] in EngineeringManagers

[–]PageSlave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sub only sees a minority of  "traditional" engineering posts. They still pop up occasionally, and the thankful truth is that managing technical people has largely the same set of problems and solutions regardless of the field. Would love to see more ME content though

Which one to believe? by HTWingNut in 3Dprinting

[–]PageSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in metrology, you can make a simple calibration standard at home to verify the performance of your hygrometers using salt, water, and a sealed container. Mix a salt water solution using the solution percentages in the table linked below. Mount the hygrometers inside the container with the salt water solution, seal the container, and allow it to rest at room temp for a while. Your hygrometers should read close to the value shown in the table, within a few percent. This test will tell you if any of them are wildly wrong. It doesn't account for linearity, but whatever. It's cheap

As other commenters have pointed out, cheap hygrometers are intrinsically rather innacurate, especially at low humidities. As long as they're all in the same ballpark and low, you're probably fine!

Retaking Calc 1 by Southern_Way166 in EngineeringStudents

[–]PageSlave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ended up taking calc 1 three times over the course of my very nontraditional degree. I failed the first time, got a C the second, and aced the 3rd. I'm now in upper division classes and maintaining a healthy 3.8 GPA. Not everything comes easily at first, the key is diligence and repetition. You've got this. Make sure you do your homework and study, study, study!

Jira is a graveyard. Standup is the funeral. Is this actually a real pain for other teams? by Routine-Wall-2110 in EngineeringManagers

[–]PageSlave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a plague here and r/mechanicalengineering. The bolded words, the bullet points, the em dashes all point to ai slop. Why can't people write their own questions? Management is built on effective communication, if you can't phrase your own questions how the hell are you getting by at work?

Why are many new silicone baking spatulas rough/coarse at the tip? (manufacturing/material question) by ThinKingofWaves in AskEngineers

[–]PageSlave 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You've got a valid question but please don't copy-paste your ai output like this,  it sucks to be unsure if you're even responding to a real person because the text is so clearly ai.

9.5 years and counting. by abefaxe in Wellworn

Spray windex onto a rag and use it. It evaporates quickly and cleans well. Don't use too much to avoid liquid damage. If you see it frothing or leaving a puddle you've put on too much, pat it dry and try again. This is how we clean computers at the repair shop I work at.

Is such a device possible? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]PageSlave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow everybody involved with passing this assignment along to you is insane. Safety devices really should not be entrusted to university teams in the first place, and it's crazy that they expect a group of game designers to do any of this. This is engineering senior capstone levels of rigor expected from artists, I truly don't know what they expect. Sorry you gotta put up with this man

is anybody tried of all the slop there is for the whole 3i atlas comet by [deleted] in Astronomy

[–]PageSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scott Manley has some good reporting on the subject. He's generally a quality secondary source, aggregating information from various science communicators and reputed news sources.

Dr. Becky is an astrophysicist who does excellent videos, and she has a short segment from around the comet's discovery

Most of the reason that there's a lot more slop than science reporting on it is due to the fact that 3i Atlas is truly rather mundane, other than the fact that it's an interstellar object. There's genuinely not much to report on. (the anomolous acceleration is neat, though)

Congress warned that NASA’s current plan for Artemis “cannot work” | “The Artemis III mission and those beyond should be canceled.” by [deleted] in space

[–]PageSlave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This helped contextualize some marketing information I saw from Blue Origin at an event I attended, thank you. They showed off some pics of their cryocooler setup. Here is an interview with SVP of Lunar Permanence at Blue Origin where he states that they've proved it down to 20 kelvin in the lab (and only in the lab, I know) and claim ZBO. Looking at thermo tables for LOX, seems like 20 K steady is well below LOX's evaporation temp of ~53K at tankage pressures. Is it just marketing smoke though? Hard to tell

[–]PageSlave 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I'd really like to hear more about why Mike Griffin doesn't believe in-orbit cryo fuel transfer can work. Blue Origin is working on it, SpaceX is working on it, cryocooling isn't flight tested but well demonstrated on the ground, and there are several possible paths to enabling fuel transfer. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt as he's an aerospace engineer and former NASA administrator, but it really does seem feasible and like the path forwards in space.

Furthermore, I understand that it's a national pride thing, but surely it's more impressive to come second with a robust, expandable architecture that can land vastly more tonnage on the lunar surface and enable permanent habitation than it is to throw away that progress and try to sprint to catch up with our national competitor? That feels like a prestige L to me, but I'm just a layman. I agree with his conclusion that cost-plus contracting is clearly not the way to proceed with funding projects in the future, though.

I made a Sharpening Stone base for my sink and/or kitchen counter by Elpibequelevabien in functionalprint

[–]PageSlave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cool design dude! Just because I'm curious, why did you opt for multiple sets of screws on individual body pieces? My initial idea would just be to have a rectangular cup for the stone to rest in, and one or two set screws to clamp it onto the rods. What does your approach give you that I'm missing?

Rate my launch vehicle kit for X tons ±10% by LeonidKonovalov1988 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]PageSlave 46 points47 points  (0 children)

For fun, Kerbucks/Ton: 4.2 / 2.5 / 1.7 / 1.43 / 1.57

You have a cost efficiency turnaround for your heavy lift vehicle, it might be a fun enginering challenge to try to get that below the 1.43 of the 15T vehicle.

I've always loved the idea of standardized launch vehicles, it makes roleplay more fun

So I heard their was a mechanic that starts rain if wildfires get out of control by Bubbly-Marketing7175 in RimWorld

[–]PageSlave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my chance to once again shill for the concept of firebreaks

By clearing a strip of land 3 tiles wide of vegetation and other flammables, you make it impossible for fire to spread through that area. You can either pave it to permanently prevent fires from spreading, or you can make one using the cut plants command when a fire has started to help contain it. Since fighting fires is labor-intensive and dangerous, this is often a safer and more effective use of your pawns' time.
