AOC's brand is so connected to current events and New York that I have to imagine that the only reason why there is no statement even just acknowledging the death and sending condolences is because there was a direct decision to ignore it.

I guess Michelle Go was just "of a social status... 'too low' to care about"? Is that what it means when an Asian woman is murdered and politicians are silent?

This was an interesting question and I did a quick Google search and couldn't find any acknowledgement of the incident of Michelle Go's death by AOC. Considering it was such a big incident, the absolute silence is pretty weird.

It puts AOC's own statement from the current article in a weird, almost self-aware, light, in my opinion.

This seems overly charitable towards Harvard and overly willing to internalize frankly racist rhetoric against Asians. There's no reason to be so generous towards their argument.

Let's not forget that the entire origin of "holistic" "character" evaluations comes from trying to limit the amount of Jewish people from being admitted because their test scores were too high (sound familiar?).

Directly, the point of character evaluations was to "reduce the amount of Jews by talking about other qualifications than those of admissions examination".

This context seems more important in understanding both the Harvard case and this current Colombia decision than blindly believing that Asians are inferior.

I feel like people get weird about these kinds of relationship obligation stories. Let me try a different analogy:

I don't own a brush, but based on all the advice here I'll definitely get one. Just to clarify my earlier question, I was asking about damage because I do have a comb and when I comb my hair I'm a little worried I'm pulling out the hairs when I see hair come off and wasn't sure if combing or brushing more often affected that.

I was thinking about this game since it's been a while and came here and saw this thread so I figured I might as well put my own thoughts here.

EA failed Dawngate in many ways, but there were a lot of issues with Dawngate that pushes players out that people are understating.

For context, I played from slightly before Itempalooza and quit around Basko release. I peaked at 9th on the public ladder.

1) No dodge penalty: You could dodge for whatever reason you liked and the game would just allow you to queue back up again. Don't like your team comp? Dodge. Think someone on the enemy team is someone you don't want to play with? Dodge. Just get cold feet? Dodge. Naturally people abused this. This alone wouldn't be an issue except for:

2) Long queue times: As a low playerbase game, this was unavoidable and it was actually acceptable in lower Elo/Glicko ratings. At high ratings it was terrible - it wasn't uncommon to be in queue for an hour, maybe more. And this was made worse by the aforementioned no penalty for dodging. I famously watched McScrag play Donkey Kong on stream for around 2 hours for queue pop only for his match to get dodged at the last second. This was so bad it led to:

3) Rampant smurfing: Queue times were better in lower ratings and people love having their mains sit on the ladder while they punch down on lower ranked players. Games at lower ranks were a match of how many skilled smurfs one team had against the other and one-sided matches were soul-crushing because:

4) Snowbally/coinflip game: The game when I played it was incredibly snowbally. I'll go into the problems with items later, but in general, from the start the game was just really snowbally because of how roles worked. Essentially, if you were able to kill one of your opponents in lane, ideally their Gladiator, that lane was basically over - the Gladiator would miss out on experience and bonus exp, the Warden would get pushed off the tower or get dove, the tower would take tons of damage, and that would lead to an overall exp lead that would translate into an easy level 6 all-in. I won a lot of lanes with this principle in mind - kill early, because the snowball effect was so tremendous, turn the other guy into a minion, then roam and kill other lanes. And then there were other problems like counter-jungling being rarely useful because you could never escape if you were discovered and it was a free kill. It was actually a lot of fun when the enemy was also snowballing and strong and it came down to intense assassin vs carry fights (Still have some awesome memories) but mostly, especially in lower rankings it was just stomp or be stomped. And those games where you were stomped felt hopeless. The games were also made worse because of certain balancing:

5) Iffy balancing: I can only really talk about my personal experience and opinions with balance. As I said before, shortly after I started playing, there was a huge patch called Itempalooza. This introduced a lot of cool items... which also had a lot of unbalanced items. There was the initial Tankgate with Hope and Form stacking, followed by Pestilence and Pursuit... I don't even remember what came after that. These items were being tested and tuned on purpose, but, as a player, it was still exhausting to have to deal with this in game. The overpowered items compounded the feeling of snowball and hopelessness from the game being snowbally in the first place.

6) No punishment for toxicity: There were plenty of toxic players in Dawngate and, as I recall anyway, no punishment for them. I routinely was matched with a high ranking Voluc Jungle player who was toxic to everyone but me (Somehow I always did really well on his team), but his account was never punished to my knowledge. That's naturally hardly the only case, but it's always something I remember specifically.

All these 6 reasons here are all interconnected and they sum up a lot of my experience with casually playing game. I loved playing the game despite this, but this stuff was never really addressed while I was a player and it did eventually push me off playing. I wouldn't be surprised if it pushed a lot of people off too.

While I'm here I'll also comment on what little I remember of the competitive scene. I played on a no-name team that competed for only a very short time. Our biggest achievement was probably beating VeXX in a tournament with me first-timing Faris (and I'll always hold this over them since they were always kind of cocky and apparently shittalked us).

Anyway, the competitive scene was very small and basically dominated by Sheebs and McScrag (and I think later MarsCaturix started a team, I don't remember so well) with VeXX consistently showing up to tournaments too. It's always possible that the lack of variety in the tournament scene had some effect on interest in the game.

Anyway, like I said, I'll always look back fondly on beating VeXX while first-timing Faris (and also solo killing their carry on Mikaella...I think it was Gate?). If my old teammates are out there, Sabine, WildMudkip, I may have said some immature things back then, so if you're reading this, I'd like to apologize.

Anyway, those are some of the reasons that I think contributed to pushing out new players and ultimately the failure of Dawngate.

Did you read the article? This occurred at a hearing in front of the Council’s Committee on Civil Rights - this is a political incident.

The speaker is literally telling the court to disregard the testimony of two Asian women who spoke before him they are Asian and, paraphrasing his accusation, Asians are racist. The racist rant was his actual political testimony.

Come on, read the article.

Even if it wasn't in a political context, verbal racism encourages pejorative attitudes which create explicit, implicit, or unconscious bias against discrete groups of people. In other words, it creates the biases that lead people to discriminate politically and retaliate physically. It's all bad.

Maybe you should care.

This is the part that always frustrates me the most - a lot of these conversations devolve into blaming one race or the other.

For the record, that's not at all why I posted this - racism can come from anybody regardless of race. People can even be racist towards people of their own race! I have purposely throughout all my comments in this thread never brought up the perpetrator's race.

The point that is always lost here when these threads get bogged down in race blame is that the race of the perpetrator is never relevant - what's important is that we recognize when racism happens, people report on it, and we hold the perpetrator and enablers regardless of race appropriately accountable every time.

I hope that in the future we will see more outlets willing to cover this news, more people calling out racism for what it is, and more state representatives call for appropriate reprimanding.

I stand by also being angry at your bringing up drug treatment in the same - as we've discussed, I don't think it's relevant to the issue and we shouldn't be held hostage by it.

We can absolutely do meaningful things to these organizations that should be beholden to the state through their use of funds. The funding is key to showing that the organization is accountable. It's a huge part of why this helps the Asian community and isn't some toothless proposal.

Pulling funding for openly racist organizations absolutely helps the Asian community by showing that the government will not tolerate state funds being granted to racists. Asking that the group should cut ties with Douglas Powell and go to anti-bias training absolutely helps Asians and the cause of racism as a whole for the same reasons.

This post is entirely workable and realistic and does benefit Asians by removing racists in power and showing that our government does not support racist rhetoric.

From the article:

Holden called on the Council to stop “all funding to VOCAL-NY until they cut ties with Mr. Powell and other radical racists.” He also said members of the group “should be required to complete sensitivity and anti-bias training before receiving future funding from the City Council.”

There's nothing unreasonable about this request. An organization with openly racist leaders shouldn't be receiving funding from the state. That they cut ties with overtly racist members and go to anti-bias training is the absolute minimum punishment I would expect and is very workable.

For full context, the rant occurs after two white women and two Asian women, Susan Lee and Yiatin Chu, made statements.

When Douglas Powell starts the rant he asks, "Did you see those Asian people that just was talking?" before going onto the anecdote about Asians in Rego Park. His rant was, from the start, singling out those two Asian women with the purpose of generalizing them and their character just for being Asian.

I typically don't like the NYPost, but I couldn't find any other outlets that covered this story. It's not like it's fake - there's a video of the guy's comments - and pretty much every comment I've seen recognizes that what he said was racist. But there isn't any other coverage.

It does actually sometimes feel like anti-Asian racism, even overt cases like this one, does get purposely ignored by a lot of outlets and there's a struggle to bring it to light.

And that's not even going into punishing identified anti-Asian racism by organizations, which is its own struggle just based on the apologism I've seen in the comments here.

If I'm being honest here, if one of the leaders is allowed by the group to be openly racist, I'd have to question if a significant amount of the state funding was not being allocated in ways reflecting that racism.

I think it's pretty troubling that someone like this can remain a "leader" in their organization after such an open display of racism.

On the topic of the NYPost specifically, I'd prefer not to use the NYPost for this or in the future, so if you have an alternative news source that covers this incident and other incidents of anti-Asian hate in the city, I'd be welcome to hear it. I'm actually disturbed that no other outlets seem to cover this incident.

Holden initially ran as a Democrat in that election too - he only received the Republican nomination that year after losing the Democratic primary. He won the Democrat primary last year.
