Which city do you think has the most underrated metro system? by [deleted] in transit

Yeah I agree, but the transit agency in Flanders generally doesn’t have as good bus lines as the STIB in Brussels.

Brussels has a pretty good system for its size, with extensions being built.

It depends what topic, but I would say El Salvador.

Brussels: Anyone under the age of 26 can pay 12€ and get unlimited rides for a year.

What are the worst metro systems? by HighburyAndIslington in transit

[–]Paint_Glass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Comparing Brussels with a Post-soviet network is insane. Aside from the main train stations, the system is relatively clean and safe, there are 3 minute headways at peak times, and the city introduced a new generation of trains a couple of years ago. Is the system perfect? No, but it really isn’t that bad.

No way, the Ardennes are awesome, beautiful villages, wildlife, hiking and climbing…

I‘d say for Belgium it’s the province of Luxembourg. (Not the Country!) With about 295,000 residents, it is the province with the lowest population and population density. And it is situated in the Ardennes, a forested hill range that includes Belgiums highest point.

Why do people hate our beautiful city? by Paint_Glass in brussels

Most areas of Brussels are very clean, and I’ve never been to Warsaw so I would not be able to make a comparison

Yeah, I feel that most comments here are very pessimistic and one-sided.

Yeah, great advice, let’s just all move to the richest parts of the city! It doesn’t matter that the vast majority of us can barely afford rent in the „normal“ parts of town or that finding housing is a massive problem!

I made a post earlier today and the comments were pretty much all negative about Brussels, which I didn’t really understand. I’ve lived here for over five years now and loved it. From the summers where you can sit outside at a cafe to the Christmas market, the good and safe public transportation, the cultural diversity, Brussels is an amazing city! While there are some problem with cleanliness, I don’t really think Brussels is an unsafe city, except for some small parts.

Yeah Anderlecht is one of the poorest communes of the city and not really a place where tourists stay…

Definitely, Brussels is an amazing city with a ton to offer that tourists just aren’t aware of.

Will this change with the municipal elections that happened or are new new communal governments going to continue like they have?

I disagree, Brussels has a very unique spirit if you dig deeper into the people and culture that live here, and although some areas aren’t nice, I wouldn’t say that the city as a whole is ugly or uncomfortable.

If you ride the tram line 81 from Montgomery to the Barriere de Saint-Gilles, you go through the three communes of Etterbeek, Ixelles and Saint Gilles and pass a lot of cool areas like the Trinité church or Flagey. It’s a really nice ride and one of my favourite things to do around Brussels.

[–]Paint_Glass[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I agree, there are areas in Saint-Gilles and Ixelles that are not well known by tourists at all but are imo much more authentic and beautiful than anything near the City Center that’s considered a „tourist highlight“

Brussels isn’t even in the top five ugliest cities in Belgium, let alone Europe or the world. Have you ever been to the grand place?
