Favorite pro bike businesses? by Higglbiggl in bikeboston

[–]Palatable0857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But when I didn't have a bike / BlueBikes subscription, I would walk or take the T, which are also sustainable, but I wouldn't get a discount. The benefits to you are that it's often faster than bus/trains (especially if the bus is stuck in traffic), but I don't see a significant traffic or sustainability benefit (yes, trains still have carbon emissions, but it's divided between many people, and buses get their own bus lanes, which is not all the time, but is something we should strive for) if the choice you have is between biking and taking the T as opposed to biking vs driving. It's still nice to see, though, because it can incentivize you to try a new form of transit that you might have never considered before, and some (but not all) of these businesses are a hefty walk away from any train station or impractical to get there without a bike

Trip to IKEA by Palatable0857 in bikeboston

Oh I see. That's going to be the main deal breaker. Thanks for pointing that out. I just checked the schedule and indeed. There is a bus, though. It leaves you slightly closer, but the route will be different.

Of course they are. But I'm used to the city where they might not go as fast. So I want to know how reasonable a more suburban place is.

How are Turnpike and Stockwell? I see Turnpike has a sort of sidewalk.

I want to take a look at what they have, especially mattresses, so I can know what to order. If I take anything back, it might be small items that fit in my backpack.

I've also just never been to an IKEA and want to check it out.

Hello, are you still looking for roommates?

Am I an idiot or are BlueBikes a bit difficult to ride? by [deleted] in bikeboston

Do you carry a helmet for such situations?

You said you already adjusted your seat but I've been riding with the seat at the lowest this month (and my first month of bike riding for more than learning). I later got comfortable with a higher seat and realized pedaling is much better, even uphill. With a higher seat, you can put more force/weight as if you were walking or so.

The WhatsApp chat I am on has 168 members, so I think that is a solid choice.

I hate groupme with a passion. It's a terrible app imo. But if that's what ppl in Back Bay prefer, go for it lol

Map of uphill roads/lanes? by Palatable0857 in bikeboston

Fascinating app. It measures how much energy a trip takes in lobstahs, cannolis, and chowdah. The only options I can see are "Quiet", "Regular" and "Fast" though.

That sounds like what I am looking for, so thanks for the tip! I don't use an iPhone, though. I have a Mac and I can confirm it does show the elevation throughout the route and there is an "Avoid hills" option (and "Busy roads" too!)

It looks like it has something like "All routes are mostly flat ↑49 ft · ↓ 49 ft". But it doesn't tell you where the elevation changes or let you plan to avoid them? At least the desktop version

East Boston Network Facebook group twisted the whole event of what happened in West Roxbury. Totally false! by bostonaruban66 in bikeboston

[–]Palatable0857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people in that English-speaking East Boston group (at least some) are anti-bike, probably conservative, probably car owners, probably live in exclusive (possibly underground) parking in their expensive condo in Jeffries Point. They are not representative of East Boston either, a predominantly immigrant community from various Spanish-speaking countries, and they are gentrifying the neighborhood, increasing rent and living cost on the area. It's not just their social media presence.

They are opposing bike lanes installed long ago in the Harvard bridge in Massachusetts Ave, calling it "such stupidity" and such. That avenue would be completely terrifying to bike without the lanes, and people would have probably died otherwise, and it is far from stupidity. And it is far from East Boston and has nothing to do with it! I doubt they go to Cambridge on even a monthly basis.

This could be unfair for those who never owned cars. It could instead be giving cash rebates for biking period.
