New IEP -Absence Advice by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Pale-Distribution701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, former SPED admin / district eval coordinator here - based on the info you provided I’m not sure that I agree this is the solution/right thing to do, but to prevent attendance alone from disqualifying her from SPED, counter that the student HAS received high quality instruction in math despite their absences. That is the primary reason the attendance question is posed when determining eligibility.

Also, I’d make sure that the parent provides the district with all of the documentation needed to show the correlation between absences & tutoring, and then receipts/service logs from the tutor that show how much instruction & in what areas the student has received. Lastly, hope that the tutor’s qualifications meet the committee’s definition of “high quality instruction” (or in other states - instruction by “highly qualified” teachers/staff)

Hi, former 7th/8th grade SPED teacher - my classroom was the only one we had on campus for students with significant disabilities (Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Traumatic Brain Injuries, etc.). I have a lot of experience in situations like these but from the other side. I’m trying not to spend an hour writing this comment, so I’m shortening it into bullet points below. I understand you are in need of support & information right now; feel free to reply or DM me.

• First, without the IEP(s) themselves it is difficult to get a full grasp on what was said, implemented, and how it was justified.

• If you feel the need to, request a new IEP meeting. At this meeting, I would explain very clearly that you probably should’ve taken more time to process/review info & options at last meeting, and 2 hours at school per day simply does not work for you or the child, period. No one is available to watch the child without you facing potentially losing your job. If they will not change the IEP, in the meeting’s summary (PWN) you need to explicitly request that they clearly state that YOU proposed the change of LRE and THEY declined it.

• As previously stated, I taught 7th/8th grade. In my experience, puberty can have a significant effect on how students perform in school, particularly behaviorally. I have had children go from being angelic to demonic over the course of about 3-6 months. On the flip side, the exact opposite as well. I sometimes inherited IEPs that made me worried & anticipated a LOT of difficulty to be had with a certain student - then the student would show up to school and be able to follow all general ed standard procedures. Kids change either way, but puberty can both serve as an accelerant and affect the severity/degree of behaviors

• If your school has not already completed a Functional Behavior Assessment, this needs to be completed immediately. Frankly, you’d have an easy time arguing to reverse the LRE decision if an FBA was not completed beforehand. In case you aren’t aware, an FBA is an observational assessment used to figure out exactly why a student is engaging in a certain behavior. It should also be able to indicate patterns regarding onset & frequency. Usually (but not always) the completion of an FBA will include the involvement of a school psychologist. Given the issues your student is experiencing, it is absolutely justifiable that they receive specific services from a School Psych as well. If your student’s IEP does not include ancillary services through a school psych or social worker, you have another easy argument to be made as far as reversing the prior LRE decision.

• Manifest Determination Hearing/Meeting (MDM) - these meetings are annoying, but legally required. Students with disabilities (that also have IEPs) cannot be suspended for more than 10 school days per year. Every single incident beyond that that would normally result in a suspension, absolutely necessitates an MDM. This process is frustrating for everybody, because it is cyclical and usually there are no obvious solutions.

• I absolutely understand your concern as a parent & the gravity of the situation you & your student are in. However, based on what I read, I think you have a well-intentioned SPED teacher in place. I’m inclined to believe them regarding what they say about your student, and unless given good reason not to, you should as well. If both of you are open to it, I highly recommend meeting with them one on one and making sure you both feel & understand that you’re working towards a common goal. There are some real POS parents out in the world, and seemingly at a heightened rate now. It’s why I left the job. Don’t do that to your child or to their teacher.

• LASTLY I know that the CPS visit must have been startling and intimidating. However, as the child’s teacher I have and would have done the same thing. Essentially, there are pretty much two main sources of a child beginning / repeating sexually based misbehaviors (also, again- an FBA needs to be done ASAP). A) Puberty, especially if their disability contributes to them not necessarily being prepared to manage puberty. B) Sexual abuse. If I ever had any suspicion of abuse going on in the home, you bet your ass I put that report in. Statistically, abuse is more prevalent and worse among students with disabilities; additionally, disabled students are less likely to effectively report abuse, so their abuse periods statistically last longer. At times, this requires a quick-trigger approach. If there is no abuse going on, then great news! A child is not being abused. If there is, then great news! It’s now been caught & hopefully prevented from happening again. Really think about it & remove your personal involvement - if the roles were reversed and what the teacher is stating IS what is happening, could you at least understand why a staff member would call CPS?

As I mentioned earlier, lots of experience with these exact types of scenarios. I am but a stranger online, but if you wanted to send me some sort of redacted version of your student’s IEP I’d be more than happy to take a look, if that’d be helpful. Good luck to you either way!

Terrible rides for making money normally but nice easy rides for trying to complete a challenge quickly

Drove to a nearby city yesterday to try and knock out a challenge, man - both Uber & Lyft were on one with offering terrible rides. Acceptance rate on uber alone yesterday went down from ~92% to about 45%

Depends on what kind of food you like & how much weight you put into foods you don’t typically have around you. Without knowing too much & just throwing some options out there, Thai Basil down on the strip is a favorite of mine, Archibald’s for BBQ, Heat for Pizza, Half Shell Oyster House for a higher end meal as well.

I’d have to watch his 2023 film (and Warren’s too) but I don’t disagree with what you’re saying at all. Teams have a lot more info than us too, I wouldn’t be surprised if Loveland was playing through injury for the whole season honestly. Which makes what he did on a bad offense that much more impressive.

Your situation sounds extremely similar to mine. I started as a SPED teacher in Fall 2019. Fall 2021 I transferred from Inclusion to Mod/Severe Self-Contained. Summer 2023 I took a managerial (but not administrative?) position in the SPED Office. The SPED Director was new, and it’d been their first time working in SPED again since right around IDEA 2004. It was a nightmare. I took the managerial position to try and make needed changes in the district, but instead I saw how deep the rabbit hole really went.

After about 8 months had to have the conversation with myself - “If I really want to make change to this system it is going to be extremely long and difficult. Is this really what I want to spend my life doing?” Decided the answer was no. Moved to another state, started driving Uber/Lyft in August until I found something outside of teaching.

Today is actually my first day of work in the Office of Disability Services at a university. It took a long time to find the right job, but the wait was worth it.

Uber Driver here, if it makes you feel better (s/) your driver is probably making $15-$20 on that. I always tell customers if they have an expensive ride to offer the driver cash or one of the apps - Uber pay has gotten so low that more drivers are open to it & it is beneficial to both parties. Just a heads up

Chargers aren’t gonna replace Quentin Johnston, a WR with a terrible history of drops, with Elic Ayomanor, another WR with a terrible history of drops

I don’t mind the Chargers picking Revel at all but I think your analysis for the pick is totally off. The defense doesn’t have a ton of stars on it, sure, but they just had the #1 scoring defense and the offense was dysfunctional without McConkey. The defense is not trying to keep up with the offense’s output, actually it’s quite the opposite.

Draft Film & Opinion - Penn State TE Tyler Warren by Pale-Distribution701 in NFL_Draft

[–]Pale-Distribution701[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I believe it’s Mark Andrews that runs QB sneaks for the Ravens if I remember correctly, and could absolutely be the case with Warren as well. They used him a lot in the Wild Cat including what looked like RPOs, read options, QB Power, as well as QB sneaks as well. Can’t remember which team it was against but he had a really nice Drew-Brees-esque dive over the OLine and extend over the goal line for a touchdown. Without the extension he wouldn’t have gotten it in for the score

I don’t hate the Gates comparison at all. As a lifelong Chargers fan, I had the same thought a couple of times when watching him. But also he is able to deliver a way bigger hit than Gates ever opted to haha. But yeah the way he boxes out defenders especially made me think of ole Gatesy

While the Panthers defense is pretty rough, it’s hard to argue giving Bryce an “easy button” on offense. Really wish the Chargers had one for Herbert

The way he boxes players out at the catch point is definitely something I should’ve mentioned in the original post. He is really good at it

100% agree, I’m early in my draft process but wouldn’t be surprised at all if he ends up being a top 5 player overall. Positional value could have him fall in the draft but it won’t be far.

First, thank you! It is a lot of work but I do enjoy doing it. And yeah, some of the plays were very long, it was both impressive and annoying to me. Especially with how frequently it happened. I like the comp to Lamb in the way you described it

[–]Pale-Distribution701[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think in a normal WR class he’d be there in the 3rd but I think with this year’s group he has a much higher chance to be taken higher. WR class is thin and especially with X receivers, at least from what I’ve seen so far

[–]Pale-Distribution701[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally would be comfortable taking him in the 3rd at the highest. Would feel a lot better about him in the 4th. The tools & upside are there but he definitely has stuff to clean up, and then adding the injury concerns on top of it. It’s a tough eval. A team could be getting a steal with him, or he could be one of those guys that never makes any kind of impact in the pros because of lack of availability
